Default Butano Creek - San Mateo County - California ?

Anyone fly fish Butano Creek? Just curious on whether or not it would be
worth driving an hour to try and catch something. Any comments would be
appreciated.
Thanks,
Bob

Butano and Pescadero both have steelhead, but I wouldn't call either a
fishing destination.

For an hour's drive? Sure they are, or at least used to be. I lived
in Pescadero in 86-87, and caught 47 steelhead that winter. Yeah, they
were half-pounders, but consistently catching 18-25 inch fish on a six
weight is nothing to sneeze at. Plus, there are (again at least used to
be) occasional silver salmon.

IIRC, there's a diversion dam on Butano above which you can fish for
resident rainbows. Maybe that's what the OP is asking about. If so,
it may not be worth the hour's drive. We're talking 6 inchers, with bow
& arrow casting. (Unless I'm confusing it with Bean Creek, a few miles
south.)

Has anyone fished either stream recently?

Bob

I'll ditto this info on Butano and Pescadero.
Not sure where which direction you'll be coming from, but your best bet for
good fishing off the coast is the Garcia River for the steelhead run. It's
much further north from Butano. The target dates to head up there is the
2nd through the 3rd week of February.

Tom,
What has happened to the San Lorenzo river the past 4-5 years?
Is it fishable still?

The San Lorenzo has been going through an on-going environmental restoration
which seems like for ages.
What was once rich in steelhead and Coho salmon has now changed. From a
local source they had a great run giant carp this past year. Not sure what
to do with giant carp other than catch and release. Yes it's still fishable,
but I've been told not to eat anything you take out of the San Lorenzo
River.

I haven't been to Felton on the outskirts of Santa Cruz for some time, but I
hooked onto an 8 pound Coho many years ago.
Would you know if Felton is still fishable?
I don't fish much locally here. I head up to the Northern California, the
McCloud, Trinity and the Eastern Sierra's.

I live in Morgan Hill and have been scouting out various parts of Coyote
Creek. I have been catching trout there. Its catch and release with
barbless hooks.

I just returned from a day trip up to the lower sacramento drifting from
redding to anderson, which was really fun, but the 4.5 hr drive up and back
is kindda tough. So, I'm kindda looking for a closer place to fish.

Who were you guided by?

Another friend booked it with the Fly Shop in Redding. I believe Larry was
the guide. It was $395 with equipment using wet flies (2 on a line). We
caught about 20 trout mostly 16-18", although I caught a nice 22"

What fly's. Thinking of taking the boat up and doing some salmon and trout
fishing. I own a jet boat.

must be nice to have a boat!
sounds like fun!

fox's poopah cinnamon #16 & mayfly olive #16,
they let you keep 1 trout, but you have to stop fishing
if you do, so i just released them all back and had a
great time. i saw salmon coming up in pairs, so they
are beginning to come in. the guide said that he was
going to try switching over to eggs soon.

you can't use beads above a bare hook, its considered
snagging i guess.

I C&R all trout as I do not like to eat them. Making a trip to the ER when
I was 11 years old with a trout bone stuck in the throat has mostly put me
off eating trout. I like fish with big bones. They do "Bead" at the outlet
on the Feather as well as on the American river for salmon.
