Default No LMB but plenty of Strippers

Iam in Southern Cali.. First year owning a boat caught plenty of fish on
the new boat in both ocean and lake but what has puzzled me the most id
not being able to hook a LMB right here in good old Socal. I have used
swim baits, rubbers, spinners, shad nothing seems to interest these LMB.
What am i doing wrong? All i seem to catch is stripper.. Anyone from
Calif have any suggestions? Lakes i tend to fish are Castaic,
Casitas,Pyramid...

If all you're catching is strippers, I'd suggest stop using dollar bills for
bait and stay out of bars....... :-)

Never fished Pyramid, but would get away from the dam, and head to the coves
and points. Some of the brush areas. Since it is fed from the Sacramento
Delta all the CWP lakes have lots of Stripers.

lol I often try to add that extra "p" when I am discussing stripers here and
at stripers24/7, and the bad part of the whole deal is that not even a spell
checker knows to catch it...since it is spelled correctly when talking about
folks that are attracted to those dollar bills.

On a more serious note, a wild guess. If you are catching stipers you
are probaby fishing open water - they are usually an open water fish.
Try fishing around cover - weeds, wood, rock - with spinners and
rubbers (plastic worms) I have heard Senko type baits are good there.

It seems that half of the tecniques that he's describing are popular
striper tecniques. I suggest not only fishing LM habitat like shallow cover
and the like, but also slowing down your presentation and fishing Senkos
wacky rigged and stuff like that. Think more worm and less baitfish. Maybe
that will help to even off the ratio anyway.
I wouldn't complain though. I wish we had more freshwater stripers here
in NJ. I have to settle for a bi-annual run that is actually happening
right now. The good thing is that the striper runs happen before bass
season and after the black bass slow down for the winter. Some guys still
fish LM into the deep fall but I can't help myself when it comes to
stripers, they take priority to me.

First off get yourself a good map of the lakes you fish and study them
before launching the boat for rock piles, under water islands, channels
etc. With a good locator and the maps you can find these areas that hold
LMB, the catching is easy the finding is a little harder.
At Lake Casitas there are no stripers, but the lake record LMB is 21
pounds 3 ounces. This lake is gin clear most of the time so light line
is almost a must. The Wadleigh Arm, Wrens Nest, Deep Cat, Dead Horse
Canyon and the main island are all good places to start. Split shot or
c-rig 4 inch worms in combinations of brown, purple and smoke work well.
Any of the deep diving plugs Fat Raps, Bagley DB 2s in foil or rainbow
work good, don't forget the swimbaits or jig 'n pig.
At Castaic Lake the same type of baits work also, the areas are
different. This lake fluctuates in water level several times a day due
to the generators for power to LA. So at times brush along the shore and
at times a lot of steep rocky banks. Look for long rocky points and
ledges and throw dart heads with 4 inch worms or doodle with brass and
glass. This is a tough lake as it gets alot of pressure being close to
LA. I've been there at 4AM during the summer with cars/boats lined up
for 2 blocks already.
Lake Pyramid was mostly a striper lake for me, did catch some nice SMB
around the dam and the islands on dart heads with small worms and on
Silver Buddys at times. I lived in 1000 Oaks when in SO CA and Casitas
was my home lake so fished it the most.
Now live in NO CA and the delta my home water and I think the best in
the state. Last Saturday son-in-law and I still catching quality LMB
from water 6 inches to 4-5 feet and had some where between 35-40 in 5
hours. The striper and salmon run is now on and will only get better.
Good luck in your bassin' and hope I was some help..
