Default Building a Bamboo Rod

There is an interesting thread developing in a new section (Purists
Paradise) of the fly fishing board I help administer. One of the
members is a rod builder and he is doing a step by step photo
demonstration of the steps in building a bamboo rod.

Here's the thread:

You'll have to register to read it, I think. Mostly painless.

There's been a book out for awhile;
"A Masters Guide to Building A Bamboo Fly Rod" by the late Master
rodsmith Everett Garrison and Hoagy Carmichael. Carmichael finished the
book in '77 a few years after Garrison passed on. The book is a step by
step
detailed description with photos on how to build a bamboo fly rod by hand
from selecting cane, to the finish of putting your name on the rod.
Everett was a structural engineer by trade, but developed a great feel for
bamboo fly-rod. He was one of the pioneers to plot graphs of what we
know today as the Garrison tapers. After reading the book thoroughly, I got
a
better understanding of the split cane rod. There's more to it than just
putting
guides on a blank.

The book is very expensive, some as high as $350.oo. but if you shop
around, hit the used book stores you can find good deals. I got my 1st ed.
for $35.oo, thinking they forgot to add a zero
fwiw,
-tom
