Default Scotland in May

Hi folks

I am planning a one week holiday visit in Scotland in May this year.
If we manage to get holiday resort with my wife, I am interested
to find fishing spots in the short distance.

Anyone can help me? My wife's niece is in Scotland at that time.
And we are visiting her.

The Dee river is close. Any other suggestions?

Thanks in advance,
Osmo

How close? Where abouts exactly will you be staying? May is a
great time to fish the hill lochs. I take a week every year and fish a
different area if I can. Trip reports, pictures and videos can be
found on my 'ftscotland' site, link in my sig. If you don't mind
joining a forum then ask your question in here too, there are a few
residents of that area who will be happy to help.

Sandy,

Thanks for your fast response.

The place is
Hilton Craigendarroch
Braemar Road
Ballater
Royal Deeside

My wife's nice is in Aberdeen and we wanted a place close enough.
We hope to get the resort reservation confirmation.
And the time would be the week #21.

What kind of gear and flies are recommended?

Thanks in advance,
Osmo

Osmo,

There are a few places in Aberdeenshire listed here.

http://www.wild-fishing-scotland.co....php?bycounty=1

How close they all are to Ballater I will leave that up to you and a
map It isn't an area I have fished tending to keep to the North
West of Scotland.

Here is a list of general fly patterns and tyings that do well on most
of the lochs and rivers in Scotland.

http://www.wild-fishing-scotland.co....h.php?byname=1

What tackle were you thinking of bringing? Rod length, line weight? A
floating line should be enough, that is all I ever use, but if you
like a sinking line then bring that too

The Don, a few miles farther North, has the reputation of being the
better trout water, the Dee being better known for its salmon.

Sandy,

I have 6 pc #5-#6 9' travel rod and another 5 pc #4-#5 shorter rod
which are easy to carry with by flight.

I also have a couple of 4 pc hevier rods, up to #9 weight class.

What is the typical size for trout? Are those lighter rods ok?
I suppose that there is no salmon at that time. Right?

Thanks
Osmo

You could be lucky Have a look on these sites for better info. on
Dee salmon than I can give.

http://www.fishdee.co.uk/

http://www.dsfia.org/index-2.html

The 6 pc #5-#6 9' rod should be fine for the trout, if you are going
to try for the salmon I would bring a heavier rod too. As you know the
usual rods for salmon over here are double handed 12 to 16 feet, what
Americans call 'Spey' rods. I don't know the Dee but if the beat you
fish isn't too big then the #9 weight would probably do.

HTH.

Thanks Sandy!

These pages are really informative.
I will read those pages when there is better time for that.

Now we are waiting for the information that we get the resort week.

Osmo
