Aside from what I consider to be a couple of reasonable guesses about
who the subject of the thread is, I have no idea at all concerning
what this is about.

And ya know what?...........It's easy.

Hey, Wolfie! Ann Coulter's latest book has a code imbedded that gives
the secret to catching Michigan trout over 10"!

Yeah, like I'm gonna bite on THAT one!

One is nearly tempted to say something about Ann Coulter and
fish.......but.....

Yesterday, I went out on a short road trip.......sort of dessert for a
much longer trip the day before.....but that's another story, one for
a campfire and the sort of libation that brings the fisherman home
with the truth not in him.

Anyway, I revisited some old haunts in the Kettle Moraine State Forest
(southern unit) in the hope of finding some nesting owls to
photograph. Didn't work.....slushy crusty nasty **** in the woods and
fields made pedestrian travel hellish. Ended up settling for hundreds
of sandhill cranes, redwing blackbirds, turkeys, lgbs and whatnot.
Toward mid-afternoon, I inadvertantly found myself at a place I'd
visited only once before.....Paradise Springs. A rather large spring
forms about a half acre pond by virtue of a damlet and sluice (once
used for hydro-electric generation.....or something or other) and,
this being the only substantial source of cold water in Southeast
Curdistan, the DNR, with the help of several local civic
organizations, has seen fit to maintain it as a catch and release
trout fishery for some years now. It is very popular among a certain
set of.......um......let us say, "urban fishermen."

I spent couple of hours preaching the gospel to a young man who has
been fly fishing for all of about two years, mostly in New Mexico
where he recently received a degree which he hopes to parlay into a
career in marketing fly fishing gear......or golf clubs. He appeared
polite and receptive, a marked and delightful contrast to
thi......well, never mind about that. He caught four or five nice
browns, all in the 12 to 14 inch class, while I was there. Their
coloration was absolutely breathtaking, the kind of thing one
ordinarily sees only in McClane's encyclopedia.....after being hand
colored. Scuds abound in this water, along with massive amounts of
vegetation that have resulted in rather alarming algal blooms in the
last couple of years according to reports I've heard.

All well and good, but the crowning moment of the afternoon came when
I looked straight down along the edge of the concrete weir we were
standing on and, lo and behold, there was a 17 inch brookie calmy
finning its way along the bottom, nonchalantly oblivious (or, more
likely under the circumstances, contemptuous) to our presence standing
above it. Scott, presumably having had little experience with our old
friend fontanalis, wasn't quite sure about the ID, so I pointed out
the features that made it unmistakeable. I watched it for several
minutes, getting a very clear view of it rooting through the weeds
along the bottom in about three feet of water and feeding on what
could only be scuds. I don't know a great deal about the habits of
fish, and would have guessed (had anyone asked me) they they do not
chew whatever they eat, but rather swallow big chunks of it whole.
This fish WAS most certainly chewing whatever it had gotten hold of!

Damndest thing I've seen in a good long while.

Wolfgang
the easily amazed (well, and amused.......but y'all already knew
that).
