April is the cruelest month. I was in Kentucky last weekend for a
crappie tournament that was named in honor of my father. It poured
down rain and was in the lower 40s. Even with a lot of clothes on and
my new Frog Togs rain gear, I was a miserable puppy.

I thought about the professional fishermen who have no choice but to
stay out on a day like that and was glad that I only did it to honor
my father. Even with a low turnout due to the weather, they raised
$1,500 for the local Hospice organization.

Rough weather can be your friend. I've had a few experiences where the
nastiest part of a storm seemed to be when we were getting the best bites.
On the flip side, just plane slow steady and miserable weather doesn't seem
to produce much.

Hammer and I fished a tournament last year up at Alamo lake. There was snow
falling when we were signing up in the morning. As the sun came up it
changed to driving rain and harsh gusting winds. We seemed to just get
clobbered left and right when fishing dead into the wind whenever it was at
its worst. Thank goodness for Frogg Toggs. I had to wear my sunglasses to
keep the biting rain from hurting my eyes. As dumb as it sounds we had a
good day. Get this. We were using radically different techniques all day.
Hammer was bashing a heavy spinner bait off the trees and I was dead
sticking a weightless worm on spinning tackle. .

The biggest check I have taken in a tournament we were casting spinner baits
into winds so bad we killed a set of batteries fighting it, ran to the
marina and bought another set to go back and fish some more and catch our
biggest fish.

I'm not 20 anymore and I'm not 56. At 41 I find a little adversity if faced
with a positive attitude to be invigorating. On the other hand, if other
things are not going well it can be impossible to maintain a positive
attitude and keep swinging. I think that's what makes Hammer such a
consistant fisherman. In the three years I fished with him I only ever saw
him get upset one time. For some reason I maintained my positive attitude
that day and kept nailing fish steadily while he wasn't even getting the
bites. When I said something to him about it yu could see his demeanor
change. About 20 minutes later he started setting the hook and putting fish
in the boat.

I've got another more recent story to tell, but not wanting to further
hi-jack your thread I'll start a new one.

You know Bob you're right. The best I ever did in a tourney was 4th place
and I threw a white buzz bait all day long in driving non stop rain. Well
that was a once in a life time thang tho for me I think lol l
