Ok Joe. I give. One of those puny little 5 and a half foot rods might be a
decent spinner bait rod after all. My son is expressing some interest in fishing again after he and I spent a weekend camping at the lake. I've got him rigged out with four rods now. I was looking at one of those old Zebco Combo rods and thought what in the heck can I do with that thing for him. Ah, heck. I'll put a spinner abit on it just to prove Joe wrong. Well, I have to admit I was wrong. No this rod is not the ideal spinner bait rod. Not enough backbone IMO, and not sensitive enough, but the soft tip sure does the job. Its easier to cast than Ifigured and even with that puny little Zebco 33 I can wake, slow roll, or just crank it in just fine. Ok, Joe, I may just have to go on the hunt for one of those wussie little broke off rods for spinner bait fishing. You win. (I'll probably still stick with my 7 footer most of the time though.) -- Bob La Londe Fishing Arizona & The Colorado River Fishing Forums & Contests http://www.YumaBassMan.com -- Posted via a free Usenet account from http://www.teranews.com |

I was so glad to read your post, Bob, and it has nothing to do with the rod
but the fact that you went camping and fishing with your son. I'm much closer to life's finale now than the opening number, and so far time spent camping and fishing with my kids ranks clearly in my top 10 memories. I gave away my 5-1/2-foot Shimano Beastmaster and the Zebco Omega spincast reel I had mounted on it, but I kept one pistol-grip 5.5-foot Daiwa Procaster rod with an old Ambassadeur reel. For close quarter fishing -- back in the buckbrush, under cypress trees, or back in the reeds and tulles, it excels. Speaking of memories, the day I finally got to fish the Colorado River with you and Lannes was one of my personal fishing highlights. I will certainly take you up on your offer of a return trip. Thanks very much. I just did a review of a pistol grip 5.5 foot Lightning Rod I got recently at an outdoor writers meeting. Great rod, love a short pistol grip rod for spinnerbaits, topwater and buzzbaits. I have two very old Lightning Rods that are still my favorites for those baits - been using them since the 1980s. Caught my best tournament catch ever on one of them on spinnerbaits - nine bass in two days weighing 36 pounds, included a 9-5, 8-11 and 6-15. Those rods had light tips but lots of backbone. The new one is a med- heavy and the tip is pretty stiff - I am trying to get one in the medium. One nice thing about them - they sell for $34.95. I have been throwing a 3/16 ounce jig head worm with a 5 inch Zoom Finesse worm on this rod. It has an Ambassadeur 5600 EXT reel and is spooled with 15 pound PLine - and that light bait casts pretty good for a short, stiff rod and heavy line. I think it is gonna be very good for spinnerbaits. The review is at http://fishing.about.com/od/fishingp...htning_Rod.htm if anyone is interested. It links to the Berkley site. Well, I haven't gone out and bought one yet, but I did look on-line at St
Croix's website and one of their reccomended spinner bait rods was a 6' pistol grip. "Ronnie" wrote in message ups.com...
