&Itemid=0 American Angler just ran an article on "switch" rods, which fall somewhere between two-handed and one-handed rods. I think I'll start calling them "hand and a half". Anyone try these? When new things come along, I'm usually of the school that thinks the same old manufacturers are trying to sell me the same thing I already own, but this seems to be coming out of the boutique shops, and the big names are following along. -- Scott Reverse name to reply |

Scott Have not tried a switch rod but do tend to prefer longer rods when conditions permit. A couple of cohorts have spey rods they use on the Deschues for steelies. Will probably build a spey rod as my next project... just to have one. Then a new reel, line, leaders & on & on & on... Maybe not. But, is the switch rod used for standard casting methods or more for roll casting when long back casts are impossible? Guy The switch cast is the same as a single Spey cast, but the fly does not kiss the water on the backcast. It is a a rather more delicate presentation cast, basically an accelerated roll cast, good at close quarters. You obtain more distance with a Spey cast. http://www.flyfish-scotland.com/switch_cast.htm TL MC |

I read the article by Zach Mattews in American Angler, pretty much as said. Years ago I got to try Steve Rajeff's 11.5 ft. G Loomis two handed rod design, before the switchrod's kicked in. It was lightweight and used a regular 8wt WF line. I could cast it with one hand if I wanted to, but the best feature was the extended handle in performing the spey casting techniques. It was very easy to load the rod. Since then, I've learned to perform those spey techniques on a single handed rod, which I prefer. Rajeff's rod was great for nymphing with the extra length (before you "" keep your mind out of the gutter Scott ;-). It was easy to highstick without adding an indicator, just add enough splits to get down where the fish were. It also felt good for casting great lengths on the large river. The disadvantage was in tight quarters. I also enjoy the old school thinking. -tom |

![]() Hey guys, as far as switch rods go there are a million options these days. The switch rods we use/build are based for a wide rand of fishing. First off, for our steelhead fishery we use a 11'6" spey blank in a 6wt with different length fighting buts that can be added or removed for the condition you need. this setup is perfect for steelhead, smallmouth, catfish, carp, and other warm water species. If you're using the rod as a fly rod, we just use the short 2" fighting butt, if using it as a spey we use the 5" fighting butt, and if using it for a flaot rod (or centerpin) we use 7-10" fighting butt depending on the person using the rod. For small stream trout we perfer a 9' 3-4 wt in which we've used all over PA, NY, OH, wyoming, montana, and idaho. I've been using this rod for quite sometime wih great success and these are the way to go. For centerpinning we only use flies unless we are after catfish we opt for worms :guns: but thats the way it is. I hope this info shed light on the subject. swat - flyandfloatfishing.com you can see more info on our site along with pictures and versions. -- flyandfloatfishing.com ------------------------------------------------------------------------ flyandfloatfishing.com's Profile: http://www.njflyfishing.com/vBulleti...hp?userid=2230 View this thread: http://www.njflyfishing.com/vBulleti...ad.php?t=12413 ----== Posted via Newsfeeds.Com - Unlimited-Unrestricted-Secure Usenet News==---- http://www.newsfeeds.com The #1 Newsgroup Service in the World! 120,000+ Newsgroups ----= East and West-Coast Server Farms - Total Privacy via Encryption =---- |
