Ken, the following is from fishing board and answers a question I
asked about guides in Labrador. " The law states that in Labrador, north of the 52nd parallel, a person must have a guide to fish more than 1/2 mile from a numbered highway. Although, I believe, as Whitehorsebasin mentioned, there is somewhat of an unwritten, don't-ask-don't-tell policy in place that allows canoeists and campers to get away with some incidental fishing while in the bush in both Labrador and Quebec - a quick look at "canoe trips in Quebec", for instance, will be full of accounts of fishing during canoe trips through Indian land, without a guide, and no one seems to be too worried about it." So, I believe you can do it without too much trouble. Whaddaya think? Dave |

I think anybody who relies on an unwritten don't-ask-don't-tell policy is just begging for a huge honkin' fine and the confiscation of his canoe and fly rods. I don't want to "get away" with something, I want to fish legally. -- Ken Fortenberry |

These two Mainers have been making the trip every year for the past five, so I believe that the "must have a guide" thingy is not enforced. You don't drive 65 all the time on the interstate, do you? Labrador has no "Indian land" (no tribal reserve territories) so the example from Quebec may not apply. Conditions vary between provinces. E.g. New Brunswick has many miles of Crown-owned (public) fishing and requires that non-residents employ a guide when on Crown waters. Other provinces do not. -- Don Phillipson Carlsbad Springs (Ottawa, Canada) |
