Great footage of what looks like very exciting fishing. It was
interesting for me to see him wading in shallow water where I always
assumed the fjords would be steep banked, deep and eminently un-
wadable. Looks like a fellow on vacation there, with simple equipment
and a few deceivers, would be in business.

Cool.

I was surprised the guy released the fish. I thought that wasn't the
custom in Norway, and in fact was frowned up.

I know that you've referred to that report (or a similar one) in the
past, and I know of your negative opinions about C&R, but I was
referring to what I thought to be the reputation of Norwegian anglers --
that they normally keep their catch.

Obviously, I was mistaken.

Thought was the report, being made up of an eclectic group of
Norwegians, probably does echo the collective consciousness of that
country, whose fishing is integral to its heritage. I'd also humbly
suggest that the likelihood of a Norwegian to make a video such as
this (the classic pattern of rock music to fighting fish) would be
higher amongst sport-trophy only anglers than the basic subsistence
angler who thinks catching a fish is too ordinary to warrant video
production. I'd also venture to bet that the basic Norwegian angler
does keep (a portion of) his catch, culling it to maintain the fishery
to maximize sustainable harvest.

I humbly suggest that your audience in ROFF in overwhelmingly
sport-trophy anglers and not subsistence fishermen, and that you are
firmly in the same category.

I will also venture to bet that a good proportion of the anglers in ROFF
do keep a portion of their catch, where it is legal and appropriate. I do.

Finally, I'll suggest that a sport-trophy angler pretending to be a
Norwegian subsistence fisherman is not a dignified position to be in.

Default Sea bass in Norway

A growing number of fly anglers now practice catch and release in
Norway and other Scandinavian countries, but the vast majority of
anglers in those countries still fish mainly for the pot. At least
those I have met and seen etc. One also occasionally reads about it on
various boards and in magazines etc. Although it would doubtless be
very difficult to determine absolutely. In quite a few places the
decline of fish stocks has lead to a change of attitude in regard to
catch and release. It is a moot point whether it actually makes much
a of difference of course.Although obviously every sizeable fish
released and not killed does make some difference to the breeding
stock,.

In that particular film, the fishery shown is a very young fishery,
bass have only been found there in the last ten years or so, as a
result of the water warming up.

Around the UK coast, where bass are also found, the majority of fly
anglers also release them. This is also because bass are slow growing
fish, and taking too many would jeopardise the fishery very quickly.
Indeed, commercial fishing has already seriously jeopardised the
fishery in many places, resulting in far fewer fish, and a much lower
average size.

A growing number of fly anglers are not usually pot fishermen per se
anyway. This also depends somewhat on the species being targeted.
Fish like mullet and bass are invariably released.
