Does anyone think a streamside thermometer is useful for anything other
than taking one's temperature? For a close approximation. :-)

Useful, yes. Necessary, no.

I've carried a thermometer, off and on, for nearly twenty years. If you're
the type who keeps an up to date journal and consults it frequently, a
thermometer will help you anticipate what you might find happening in a
familiar stream on any given day.....after a few years...something that,
without a thermometer, you will do anyway. Nothing wrong with that. It's
another legitimate aspect of fly fishing....for those who want to go that
route. On the other hand, you can live, and fish successfully, forever
without it.

who uses the little six inch long meat thermometers with the steel
spike.........hey, you can always kill something with it.....right?

It always helps in making an excuse for not catching fish. Too cold? Too
warm?

I think trout feed very actively around 60 degrees.

Under 50 degrees they can be sluggish and it might be better to fish while
the sun is on the water warming it a bit? Maybe fish in slower water because
they are not too active.

Over 70 degrees can effect them too. Maybe fish real early when the water is
at it's coolest temp? Fish in the highly originated riffles?

I think having a stream thermometer is a good idea but after many years you
probably don't need it?

I've used them a time or two to diagnose and monitor hypothermia patients in
the field. That's the major reason why mine has a long string tied through
the loop on top of the case.

So, do you carry it in a pocket in front, or in
a pack on your back ?

Things with which to kill other things should always be kept ready to
hand.......top left pocket.

And which way is
the spike pointing ?

Unless I am writing this posthumously (and I'm fairly certain that I am
not), it is safe to assume that it points outward.
