Default one of the best I've met

I've never fished with him, but have crossed paths along the stream several
times. Each time I've 'secretly' watched him fish for a while and always
been impressed. I've enjoyed a few chats with John and it is very clear
his fishing knowledge is both real and deep.

If I have a "bug question" while in Yellowstone area, John is who I seek out
for an answer in a town full of 'experts.' He is an exceptionally modest
and quiet man, but gets excited and eager when he senses a genuine interest
in the area's angling and especially the local "hatches" and how to imitate
them.

In the linked piece I noticed this quote from him "Fly fishing is all about
imitating the insects that the fish are eating," he says. "Insects are
fundamental."
Sounds like a very smart man G

He has produced some of the finest "fly fishing" photographs I've ever seen.

Most anglers in the West have probably seen or heard his name, but I believe
he deserves more 'famous fisherman status' than he seems to get

Could be he doesn't *want* 'famous fisherman status'. In my
book, that's be more deserving of respect than being a famous
fisherman...

THAT is a good point ... ah, both of them.

I'm sure you're right.
