Just glanced at it, but seems to give some basic straightforward info.

just back from western trip...saw the unita county wyoming wind farm -
lots of wind out there, and the turbines actually were visually
appealing on that particular landscape. ate breakfasts at the teton park
signal mountain lodge that has dedicated its entire operation to a
"green" business concept, including energy purchase from wind generation
(also only fair trade, organic coffee)...excellent food, nice view of
lake and tetons...and a decent distance from that ratnest called
jackson.

I've been looking at this: http://www.helixwind.com/en/ for my own
home. Unfortunately, a cost/benefit analysis with the cheap
electricity we have here kinda spoils the fun. Of the home systems
I've seen, this one seems to have the most bang for the buck without
the need for a 60 foot mast. Additionally, the noise factor is low.

Have you looked at solar?

Yes, efficiencies aren't there yet especially with the fact that my
local company does not have a "buy back" program for dumping energy
into the grid. One of my big issues with both solar and wind is the
storage batteries. Too expensive and too much of a hassle to
maintain. Don't want bunches of lead acid in my house (with the
concomitment explosive issues), but its the only place to set them
over a Nebraska winter.

This looks very interesting. Solar on this wet side of the Cascades is
not an option. I sit on a hill facing SW and am on a straight shot for
wind from the coast sweeping around the southern flank of the Olympic
mountains. I heat with electric augmented with wood. Wifey is on my
case per the wood burning for environmental reasons. This set up is
also interesting as a power source for irrigation. Thanks for the
addy.

I suppose your electricity might be coming from hydro. If not and it's
coming from coal or gas, then a wood burning stove ought to easily
beat your electricity on environmental concerns. Nuclear is a harder
thing to compare -- some love it, some hate it, both for environmental
reasons.

You might wish to look into AGM batteries. I'm sure a Google search
will produce more than you want or need to know, but they help solve the
two of the problems you mention - acid spills and freezing. As to
"expensive," well, that's a personal call, but they aren't what most
folks would call inexpensive.

Here's a link that might give some info:

I think someone should provide them to Frank for testing. If anyone can find
the dangers of *anything* (yes, including marshmallows), it would be Frank.

Hydro mostly, some wind, one coal, and odd hog fuel fired plant. Put
it this way; WA could meet the Gore challenge fairly quick I am told.
Her concern is the small particulate from my old Great Majestic coal
cook stove. I try to stick to hardwood and I know how to lay a good
long heating fire. But it is not a modern stove. Might have to join
the 21st century on this one.
