Default Syringes and Bass Competition

Greetings,

Last weekend(September 26-28)Kingston, Ontario hosted a Bass
Tournament out of the Portsmouth Olympic Harbour. A great time was had
by all. On Sunday evening, I was watching the anglers pack up, and I
saw a guy fiddling in a compartment inside his boat -he tossed
something small onto the grass. Shortly after, he drove off, so I was
wondering about what he had thrown from his bassboat. It was three
syringes- two of them had the protective caps on, the 3rd was
uncapped- it was a large gauge monster of a needle, and sticking
almost straight up from the grass. Nice. What the heck would a
competitive angler be using syringes for. BTW, one of the capped
needles had blood on it, and it didnt look like human blood.

Lol, have I discovered Bass fishings dirty secret?

First off the guy is a jerk. Littering is my number one bitch about a lot
of outdoorsmen. I've even taken one guy back to the dock and put him ashore
during a tournament refusing to let him back in my boat after he
deliberately tossed trash in the river. If you know hime tell him Bob la
Londe called him a jerk.

However, there is probably nothing nefarious about his having syringes in
his boat. When bass (and other fish) are brought up from deeper water the
gases in their swim bladder expand, and can harm or even kill the fish. A
syringe needle is used to release that pressure for the better survivability
of the fish.

I agree that the guy was a JERK. However, I have used syringes while
fishing on to many occasions to count - to inflate nightcrawlers.

I forgot about that since most of the guys I know use a commercial worm
inflater for that. Good point.

Thanks for the replies, guys. I learned something today -fizzing-!

The worm inflation theory was suggested by a friend as well.
Still, this guy is either evil, or too stupid to be playing with sharp
objects.

I don't mean to butt in, but I read about an alternative to fizzing some
time back. Wish I'd saved it, but I did not. Someone had devised a weighted
rig that gripped the lower lip allowing the fish to be taken down to depth.
Once there the rig was "released", leaving the fish unharmed.
I guess it didn't catch on, what with most releases being dock side in
somewhat shallow water. However, seemed like a neat idea for deep water
catches, especially those that didn't measure/keep.

The article Ronnie linked to mentioned a weighted basket.

P.S. Butt in all you like. This is what Usenet is for.
