Default TRs on it's terms

My wife suggested I go fishing to which I replied that I didn't really like
my local river. I tried to explain and afterwards she replied in her
normal perspective manner, "You should try to appreciate it for what it IS
not compare it the places you go in Montana."

So I've gone down a couple times for an hour or so each time. I catch
fish, not many, ..... but they are small.

My weak kneekle won't let me safely wade to much of the water and today I
realised I don't really know how to fish much of what I can reach. I've
been catching in the edges of very fast, knee deep riffles, using nymphs or
swinging a soft hackle. But much of the water looks to be around waist
deep, very fast ( standing waves ) and dangerous looking, slots that drop
off from the riffles. I don't really know if these deep spots hold the
best fish, but they look like they 'should' to my, rather uneducated at this
type of fishing, eye.

So, how the hell do you get a fly down in waist deep water that is really
moving along? ( I'll wear a CO2 vest if I go back to try this, this stuff is
really moving, deep, and the bottom is slippery as hell ) Access and
brush make 'high sticking' from the side of these areas with only short lob
casts seem like the only option. I've heard of, but never tried, using a
heavy streamer or such, as weight to get a nymph down. I can't see any
way any true dead drift can be achieved ... by the time a 4 inch rock sunk
to bottom it would be 15 feet down stream ... so I'm thinking a heavy
something and a little something in tandem ... realising they will be
presented more "on the swing" than anything.

Suggestions ???

FWIW Tie up some streamers on heavy hooks. Partridge, the English
outfit has some heavy Irons. You will need to use a bit of super glue
to get the material to stay in place and these hooks need to be
sharpened before you fish them. The irons are a better bet than split
shot in my book for fishing big streamers. And I like this better than
a sinking tip set up.
