Well, it came time, all too soon, to close up Clave Central for the season,
so last Thursday I headed to Coburn. Now, at this time of year, the weather
can be cold and damp, and fishing big streamers requires an angler cover
much ground to find bigger fish. Thus, I prepared for the trip by spending
several days consuming all manner of fats, carbohydrates and adult
beverages. Duly prepped, I headed north. Cold, it was; 28 degrees on
Thursday night. Friday came forth, breezy, nippy, but good fishing weather.
The trout cooperated as well, pounding size 6 streamers in all the faster
spots on Penn's Creek. Their colors were magnificent, dark bodies with
bright touches of red, blue, inky black and white. This is the best time of
year to coax the larger Penn's browns as they head upstream towards their
spawning creeks.
Saturday was raining most of the day(typical Penn's), but the fishing was
possibly even better. I landed my two biggest Penn's trout for the season,
one at the absolute base of a small waterfall. Mike Shaw, gimping around on
a bum ankle did well with streamers and picked up a few on nymphs, as well.
I spent some time with Bruce Fisher, as well, who has been adopted by a dog
of equine proportions.
Sunday, Mike and I closed up, but he lingered behind for another day of
fishing, as I returned to the 'real world'. Time to tie flies, dream dreams
and look forward to next season up at Penn's. Perhaps, this is a good time
to remind all that next May brings the 10th Penn's Clave, and I hope all
will mark their calenders for the last week of May.
