Friday: too damn cold, Owens river not putting out.
Saturday: Driftboat on the Owens (7 mile drift in 1.25 straight line
distance in Bishop), partner lands many fish, I don't land one. I hook one
"Alper" (term for an Alper Ranch-raised stocky. Average 2-3 lb., some to 8
lb.) that breaks the hook on a #8 Hornberg. Partner laughs at me. Is
getting fly mounted. Laughs again. "Because I'm your friend, when you fall
on your face, I'll be there to laugh at your silly ass." This from a guy
that has no compucntion against putting a treble hook and Velvetta on the
end of his fly line. Life is cruel. Gary Brock of Brocks Fly Fishing is an
excellent guide.
Sunday: San Gabriel River - Raining. No fish moving.
Best thing about California: Baja-style Mexican food (taquitos, chimi w/ 1
1/2 lbs of stripped beef, Spanish rice, frijoles, guac, dos equis $8.50
Amerikun)
Worst thing about California: They've cornered the market on good Mexican
food and won't let it out of state.
