Default Penn's Clave--May 23-25

Details, from notes:
May 23(Sat)--hit the stream pretty early in the day with Makela, Handyman
and Reid. Fished downstream from Coburn trestle bridge. Saw Gene C from a
distance. Caught fish on pair of wets(March Brown and tan submerger).
Evening on Bruce Fisher's pool in Weikert.
Tough fishing for sporadic risers. Not a major hatch seen.

May 24(Sun)--daytime was very bright and largely fishless, although Handyman
caught a couple early. Evening marked by a fine dinner at Stan's place in
Coburn. Barbequed chicken, corn on the cob and roasted potatoes with onions
and peppers(the latter was near perfect.....just needed a bit of saltinside
joke). Digested at the riffles above the bridge at Stan's. Stood
in the midst of a massive, very localized hatch of dorotheas. They were
streaming skyward, from a 30 yard-long stretch of water. Once again wets
caught fish,
but had to be fished quickly, with action.

May 25(Mon). Memorial Day was reserved for a trip to
Weikert area, to a lovely section of pools and riffles below the Catch and
Release area. The start of fishing was a bit slow, but there were some Grey
Foxes and Sulfurs hatching. Joe the Elder took a fish or two on sulfur
parachutes. I took a couple on Grey Foxes. At 6 pm or so, Coffin Flies
started the dance of spinners over the flats. Fish took Catskill-style
imitations, but females didn't join the dance in huge numbers. More
intimate, however, were the Ginger Quill spinners(grey fox spinners) and
Invaria spinners, who filled the air in waves. I have never seen a thicker,
flying mass of spinners. Both fell, and the fish gorged. Caught several more
on #12 2xl sized Ginger Quill spinners, and actually was sated with catching
and wallowed out of the stream with light still available. Relaxed, and
enjoyed a beer waiting for others. All came in with similar glowing reports.
The Penn's clave bug-fest was underway..............
(to be continued)
Tom
