Had a couple of great days fishing Spring Creek Friday and Saturday.
First let me say that the Penns Creek water temperature at the parking lot side of the stream at the trestle bridge was 76 Thursday evening. The good news though, on Saturday morning it was 67 up near the Fish Commission sign. That’s what cool evenings will do- give the fish a break. Just like we enjoy a break from the heat. So, I fished Spring Creek below Fisherman’s Paradise on Friday, I got squat! That was in spike of being on the water by 7AM. Late in the morning I took a break and had my lunch at a Paradise picnic table. Then I went to Benner Spring section of Spring. The 4 fisherman calling it a day at the parking area all had success that morning. Everything from caddis, to midges, San Juan worms, and scuds. So, I walked down stream and working up, I hooked 5 or 6 in an about an hour and a half. I got them all on pink San Juan worms. Between the rocks and the trees, I ran out of the them in my box. None of the fish were particularly big but I was amazed as to how much different that part of Spring Creek fished as opposed to down below the concrete bridge. Saturday, I figured, I repeat the process. Get there early and toss SJ worms. I lost one fairly small brown and got a 14 inch sucker to the net in the first 10 minutes then zip. My reloading the box with Pink San Juan worms was for naught. But then I switched to a beetle with a scud about 10 inches off the back. Bam! I got a 12 incher then a 16 incher. My day, no, my weekend was made! But 15 minutes later I caught and brought to net a 20 incher! A 20 incher! I thought my 5 x tippet might break but I held onto my 9 foot 3-weight for dear life and got him in the net. “Three weight” you might ask? I thought I was going to be casting size-24 tricos but they never materialized. What a day! What a weekend. |

And how deep were you drifting? I do believe some grinnin' and strutting are called for. :-) -T |

There are some very big fish in Spring, but they have lockjaw for the most part. Congrats!!! Frank Reid |
