Saturday I drove 2 hours to a picnic at Hale Eddy. Nice conversation, good
food, fine bs about trout. Around 4:00 I suited up and went in upstream of the bridge. Bright sunshine, lots of caddis in the air, dun and spinner mayflys. No rises in the riffles . Kids swimming at the head of the pool below the bridge and spin fishers in the pool sent me upstream. I figured that the weather had the trout in deeper spots so I waded across 100 yards of 6" to 12" deep water to a side channel to work nymphs and streamers. And an hour later, joyless, I waded back and spooked trout well longer than 12" that were working along the bottom in fast 6" water. My guide friend (and TU chapter president) said "Oh sure, they're in there all day sometimes. You should have been nymphing or using a dropper behind a bushy dry fly." Standing where I should be fishing and fishing where I should be standing. An occasional stop and look around might help. Sigh. Glenn GKT |
