Default A couple of newbie float questions

This past four days, my wife and I went fishing. She had a float tube, a
Caddis, and all the stuff. I bought a new set of neoprene chest high waders
with the soft feet. I used her tube and flippers.

All seemed to go well, but she said I sat too low in the water. The water
got in over the top of the waders a little. It seemed like I would slink
down in the seat, and have to pull myself up from time to time. This is
when I got the water in.

I weigh about 190, and she about 120.

Question: How do I select my own tube so that it has enough flotation for
me? Are they rated by the poundage of the user? And do I need the round
donut type, the U-shape, or the two pontoon boat thinguses? I like quality
goods, but don't want to have to sacrifice any limbs for the purchase.

Some pointers in the right direction would be appreciated.

TIA

Steve

If you don't have to pack it in, get a pontoon boat.

If you're shipping water over the top of chest wader there is
definitely something wrong and, at 190 pounds, it isn't likely an
overweight issue. As a matter of fact, it's hard for me to imagine
how you can be that low in the water unless your armpits are ON the
tube. Seems that you are somehow sliding WAY forward on the seat.
Many boats are equipped with a crotch strap designed to prevent that.
If yours has one, use it. The cause of the problem may be that the
neoprene waders are providing enough floatation so that you simply
don't have enough weight on the seat to keep you in place. Try it
with lightweights or, better yet, go wet.

This may be a silly question, but had you inflated the tube enough? The tube
should fill the outer covering tightly when it is fully inflated. I weigh
about 245 lbs and don;t have the problem you describe.

Well, no, it did not fill up the nylon covering tightly. I guess my wife
should have noticed this, but she apparently didn't use the tube a lot. I
thought it a little soft, but figured she knew what she was talking about.

Hmmmmmmm ............ sending me out into deep water without enough
inflation ....................... better keep an eye out ..........

Will try it inflated more the next time.

And not such a silly question after all, eh?

I'm sensing the return of the chocolate taco from hell. Them sucker's will
fold up on you quicker than a Republicans wallet at a Nader convention.
Gotta have it filled till the cover is tight.

And if you're a big fellah fishing cool water, you may need to top off the
inflation once the bag has cooled down...
