Default Local tackle shops

I am writing to tell you all to support your local tackle shops! My local
shop "Supertackle" in Beeston Notts has just shut down which means to get
bait I now have to drive 4-5 miles into Notts just to get half a pint of
maggots and a tin of hemp! I always took the local shop for granted but now
im left feeling a little sad as its gone. Hopefully it will be taken over
and made back into a tackle shop, I hope so as I don't fancy that trek to
get bait! Anyone else have any local tackle shop stories?

Unfortunately, I dont know any local fishing shops as I live in Bolton
near the huge BAS shop.

Maybe there should be a poll to see how many people actually get good
service from a local tackle shop.

I spent 5 hours going round five tackle shops in Brum on Saturday and
without fail found them to be scruffy and badly stocked, including two
that have very fancy websites which claim to have everything in stock
for immediate delivery.

Not one of these shops was welcoming, in most cases the person behind
the counter spent most of their time talking to the obvious locals in
the shop and didn't even acknowledge our existence. I left one shop
after a barrage of foul language came from behind the counter, this
carried on even when it was obvious I had my 10 year old son with me.

Came home, bought everything I wanted on the Web at far better prices
(and was able to choose from far wider stocks) than any of these so
called tackle dealers could offer.

Just my two penny worth :-)

(****ed off with wasting five hours going to dingy holes with no stock
!)

I am not making any judgement but here goes:
Where my son works the customer service manager was offered something for
long service. His answer "Carp gear of course".
Together with the managing director, they went to the local tackle shop in
Hitchin Herts. They were going to spend around £700, this included buying
two identical carp rods.
One of the rods was marked up £5 more than the other, when he asked if he
could have it for the same price as the other one. the guy said that as the
manager was not available he could not authorise it.
In any event they went elsewhere and the Local tackle shop lost a sale of
£700.

Over many years angling I can't say that I have ever been in an angling shop
that has made me feel welcome. In some I have actually felt intimidated. I
have never had good advice on tackle, bait, local fishing and methods.
Sometimes I have been sold poor tackle as they have obviously wanted to get
rid of it! (I have always taken substandard products back and demanded a
full refund). With declining angling numbers and the power of the internet
its no wonder these shops are shutting down. If they just showed some
greater professionalism, cleaned up the shops, got rid of the coffee
swilling match anglers that frequent the counter and give some friendly
advice then they might stand a chance. For me after 30odd years fishing I
would be quite happy to buy all my gear off the net and breed my own bait!

A pity. I've been lucky I suppose but there have been several, there still
are two, where I'm recognised and welcomed even though I am a terrible
customer.

I have to admit that I've never felt welcome in a City TS. In small towns
where there may be little or no local competition they are under much less
pressure and are often run by very friendly individuals. Usually these
places also supply other country sports - shooting and riding are commonest.
These tend to iron out the seasonality of the trade which must be a big
problem for pure tackle shops.

The coffee swilling matchmen btw are really easy targets for the cunning
dealer: Much more pressure to get the latest gizmo and so acquire an
(mythical) edge - if Sid gets one everyone else has to - just in case. I
always regard them as a negative sign. A good tackleshop doesn't need to
sell coffee. (Mind you plenty of pubs in the west of Ireland sell a bit of
tackle on the side, that seems to work.)

Seek out an older, established shop; one that no longer has anything to
prove. Go when they're not too busy and be willing to offer them something
too. Half a tackle dealer's trade is information, it doesn't have to be
directly about fish (in fact he may be bored by talk of the local
'twenties') - a snippet combined with a query like (one that occurred here
recently) 'I see the gate at (local water) has been vandalised, who do I
inform to get it fixed?' is fine. You don't have to spend a fortune to be
treated well.

Cheerio,

4 - 5 miles..
My local tackle shop is 4 - 5 miles away from me. I dont think that five
miles is an unreasonable distance to have to travel to get bait.
How long does it take you to drive / cycle there ???
