![]() 6/28/04 I don't know the exact relationship between shark tournaments and fog, but there seems to be one. Last week at Star Island's tournament the first two days were socked in and now the Montauk Marine Basin also had thick fog for both days. Whoever is in charge of fog probably didn't realize that Star Island had a three day tournament. These contest all start with a bunch of boats lined up in the inlet waiting for the starting gun and then they all blast off. Most boats have radar these days, but even so, there is a certain percentage of those boats who don't know how to operate it, making it a nerve racking hour or so until they all spread out once they pass the light. Shark fishing is pretty good right now, with plenty of bluesharks and a sprinkling of exotics, but the exotics are mostly of the longtail variety. The Marine Basin has a minimum weight of 175 LBS, and no qualifying makos were brought in. Last week at Start Island only one mako broke that threshold. The results of the Montauk Marine Basin Tournament are as follows; LARGEST SHARK - 317 LBS THRESHER - "FREEDOM" 1st PLACE BLUE SHARK - 275 LBS - "PROFESSIONAL CRYER" 2nd PLACE BLUE SHARK - 272 LBS - "AL'S GIRL" 3rd PLACE BLUE SHARK - 249 LBS - "OH BROTHER" 1st PLACE OTHER - 317 LBS THRESHER - "FREEDOM" 2ND PLACE OTHER - 302 LBS THRESHER - "JACQUELINE" 3RD PLACE OTHER - 274 LBS - "JOKA" TIE 3RD PLACE OTHER - 274 LBS THRESHER - "MY DESIRE" TIE Inshore the fluke fishing is excellent, both in numbers of fish and size. Don't bother measuring anything. If it looks borderline, throw it back. There are bigger ones down there. Seabass fishing doesn't seem to be very good, but if you are a fan of scup, it looks like you are going to be in hog heaven this summer. I haven't spoken to anyone who has specifically targeted them, but right now they are being caught by mistake on diamond jigs and on fluke baits. Seabass fishing doesn't seem to be very good right now, although there are spots that are holding good fish. It's just a matter of working your ass off to find those spots. There are still some doggies around to torment those bottom fishing, but they seem to be in small packs rather than all over the place. Striped bass fishing isn't what we would like to have. A limit of two keepers per person on a six pack boat is not a sure thing, although most of the boats are managing to do it more often than not. The good old reliable chartreuse parachute with red pork rind is the key to success. If you would like to have these reports sent to you directly, just drop me a note at .
