Default Motor question??

I have a 1988 175HP Merc. It has low hours and runs great. The electronic
module that provides low oil alarm has malfunctioned. Can I remove this
module

Also, I would like to get rid of the oil injection system and go to mixing
my own. Is this a good or bad idea?

I don't claim to be an outboard expert, but as a retired small engine tech,
I have wrenched on a couple two-strokes.

The low oil alarm is to prevent you from seizing the engine due to running
out of oil. It'd be a lot cheaper to fix it than to buy a new motor.

Do you know what exact fuel / oil ratio the engine requires? An oil
injection system conserves oil by metering the precise amount needed for
lubrication, something that 2-stroke mixes have long had a problem doing.
Fuel / oil mixes have to have twice as much oil to insure lubrication.

Carburetion jetting must be enlarged to flow the correct amount of mix,
since the combination of fuel and oil is significantly more viscous. If an
injected engine then the chip needs to be reprogrammed.

And again, which is cheaper, the low oil minder or a new 175 hp engine????

I would replace the module. Pre-mixing the oil is not only a pain in the
tookus, but with the oil injection system, you're getting a much more
precise fuel/oil mixture.
