Default Dubbed Patterns

Anybody ever use Dog hair as a dubbing material? I was asked to tie some
patterns using Basset hound fur/undercoat. Any (serious) suggestions? I know
there's going to be some smart ass comments . but, try to refrain.
Thanks in advance.

The fly known as the " Dogsbody" ( Although I usually use hare fur), is a
great fly, invented by Mr.Harry Powell, a well knownUsk angler and
fly-dresser of yesteryear.

Body: Brown tying silk dubbed with camel coloured dog´s hair, ribbed with
oval gold tinsel.
Hackle: Grizzly, with a natural red cock hackle in front.
Tail: Three strands of cock pheasant centre tail.

Usually tied on hook sizes 12 to 16, this is a very useful general pattern.

There have been many flies tied with dog and other animal fur and hair. One
can indeed use practically anything as dubbing, but some things are better
than others.

Anybody ever use Dog hair as a dubbing material?

When I brush my liver-and-white Brittany, I get a blend of very dark
brown and white hair that's a good color and texture for sow bugs.

I pay him one Milkbone for each batch. Hair, I mean. I have to tie
the flies myself.

I've had a dog grooming shop for about 20 years and have tried hair from
just about every breed and cross. They all have different properties.
The only one I ever used and liked was poodle, if it's the right length.
It makes a nice spiky nymph when blended with something like rabbit.

Even though it's free, I don't use it anymore.

I've used our "tortoise shell" cat's fur for scuds in the white mountains
for dubbing in the fall months for years. Sinks well and does fairly well
in the lakes in the White Mountains of Arizona...

Well, that short scruffy fuzz you squatty little Bassets produce
sucks, but we Brittanys grow a superior quality hair, better than any
extruded by a stupid cat! (Pardon the redundancy.)

I proudly keep my master supplied with hair that's just perfect for
cress bugs. He pays me in Milk Bones. (Cheap bastid!)
