I just purchased lightweight Gore-Tex waders, probably not good enough for
the fall. I will be in waters about 48 degrees and was thinking of buying 2mm neoprene pants as a layer to wear under the waders. A friend mentioned that neoprene might be too hot and also doesn't breath. Suggestions for layers under the waders? The waders I purchased also have neoprene socks attached. -tom |

When its downright cold, I put some expedition weight polypro leggings underneath. If its not so cold, I just wear some lightweight nylon camping pants instead. --riverman |

And in really cold weather, I wear a thin layer of capilene long underwear under the fleece pants. In the summer, if I'm not wet wading, I wear supplex pants under the waders, or in cold spring creeks, capilene under the supplex. You can get comfy in almost any conditions by layering. If you wade in very cold water and wear heavy socks under the neoprene booties, be sure to have a pair of boots that fit loosely. Even with good socks, tight boots = cold feet. JR |

Suggestions for
layers under the waders? Polar fleece. Ditto (not the Ditto jeans from the 80's either). -- Frank Reid Reverse Email to reply |

Suggestions for layers under the waders? The waders I purchased also have neoprene socks attached. I don't think 48 degree water is all that uncommon in wading, especially on some tailwaters in the fall and early spring. Charlie had it right with the fleece pants if you're that prone to cold legs. I will sometimes wear a pair of long underwear, or lined jeans except on the really cold days where I add the fleece pants. I would recommend you worry more about the feet and wear wool, smartwool, or synthetic (fleece) socks over a liner. Wayne |
