Default Help me to choose

I am looking to buy a 7' or 7 1/2 foot fly rod. I have an 8, 8.5, 9,
9.5 ranging from mid-flex to fast tip. I have read extensively about
various actions available to the point it has almost become
information overload. I realize that folks have their own
preferences, and a particular action will dictate how a fly is cast.
The rod will be used primarily for small stream trout and panfish.
Advice of friends consist of full flex or mid flex. I would apprecite
hearing from those using seven footers who would be willing to share
their expertise and advice. Top of my list is the Orvis Trout Bum 7'
full flex. Orvis will also produce a 6' full flex called The Flea
which seems interesting.

Thanks,

Dick

You might want to check out Winston WT series 6'6" and 7' 2wt and 3wt
rods. I have the 6'6" 3wt, which I like but have fished too little to
make any in-depth analysis (and it's still down to preferences, as you
noted). Someone mentioned quite recently here that Winston also has a
loaner program so that you can test fish the rod before you buy it.

Cortland also makes a nice 6'6" 3/4wt. I've taken mine out last year on
Devil's Hole Run and another sweet little stream that prefers to remain
anonymous, and the little rod was really a pleasure to use. I think it's a
good choice in the $120 price range.

Really though, IME, fiberglass has a better feel in the small sizes than
does graphite. My first "real" flyrod was a 7' Wright & McGill; I learned
to cast with that thing, and it's still a pretty nice litle rod, except for
the fact that, again IMO, 6wt is too heavy for a little rod. I also have a
7'9" Shakespeare "Wond0rod" [sic], that's a swell rod, but for the fact that
it's a 7wt. Good wooded lakeshore bass rod.

This summer I picked up on eBay a 7' 5wt South Bend Outdoorsman glass rod in
unused condition. Now I won't try to kid you that it's pretty like an Orvis
or a Winston rod; nobody's going to look at it and think you've got a job,
but boy let me tell you what, that little rod casts about as well as you
could like - any better and it would be unethical to use it.

Steffan Brothers sell blanks and completed fiberglass rods that are
well-spoken of on the glass rod ezboard. They have a 6' 2wt 2 piece blank
that's calling...

You are asking for advice about some of my favorite fly rods. I happen
to have an old Fisher 7.5 foot 3 weight that is one of my personal
favorites. If you happen to stumble into one of those old rods, don't
pass up a chance to try it out. Another that many have a special
fondness for is the old Sage Liteline 7 foot 9 inch 3 weight rod. Orvis
has made some very nice rods in this range for both 2 and 3 weight
lines. None of these rods is going to be perfect for making 70 foot
casts on a regular basis, but you can have a lot of fun with these rods
on small streams or your local bluegill beds.

i don't know about your locale, but that rod has been declared overly
erotic and thus illegal, down here in the old north state.

Take a look at this rod made by Damon Rod Co of NY. I have one of their 3wt
7 1/2 foot rods and I really like it a lot. He makes several different
series so you can choose if you want a fast/med/or slow rod. I don't think
you can go wrong with one of these.

a friend recommended a st.croix avid AF603, 6ft 3wt. and it
is now my goto rod for the very small, very brushy streams of
central NJ/ Monmouth/Ocean counties.

here's the marketing hype from st.croix:
"crafted from our premium lightweight, high-modulus SC I II graphite,
they feature versatile, moderate actions that load easily and
progressively down the blank for a smooth, powerful casting stroke. So
you get maximum "feel." And precision line control. They're also very
adept at protecting light tippets. "

if you can find a shop to try one, I would recommend it highly.

tight lines,
Rob
