I'm thinking of going on a big game trip, near the Canary Islands.
Being from Belgium, I think it's the nearest place to go. Not entirely, Madeira for instance is a bit closer. There are also some possibilities in Portugal, Marocco, Croatia, Senegal, Oman and even Yemen. Anyone got experience with this, or tips... Lots of experience on many destinations in several parts of the world. In the Canary Islands on Gran Canaria (several boats in Puerto Rico and Puerto de Mogan), La Palma, Graciosa, La Gomera and El Hierro. Furthermo Cabo Verde islands, Ascension Island, Senegal, Mexico, Kenya, Mauritius, Rodrigues and many more. Your info is insufficient to be answered thoroughly. But even if you had mentioned: which month, most wanted species, which island, budget, number of anglers, number of fishing days etc. etc., it would have been to long a story to provide you with an adequate reply. A life conversation would be more suitable. In general the chances to catch a blue marlin in Canary Island waters for an individual angler during a few days on a big game charterboat are very low. There are better opportunities a thousand miles south of the Canaries on Cabo Verde islands. Especially on Sao Vincente and Fogo. For sailfish Dakar in Northern Senegal and the Casamanche in the south are still good. During a few weeks each year the chances for white marlin are really good in Moroccan coastal waters. Some white marlin and an occasional blue are also caught from Portugals southern Algarve coast. There are chances for giant bluefin tuna during a few weeks in spring and autumn from the Algarve, and during a longer summer period from Jezera harbour in Croatia. Some giant bluefin are also caught from the Irish westcoast. I spoke to two captains involved but never gave it a try myself. By the way we encountered giant bluefin with our own boat on the other side of Ireland, in the Irish sea, on a trip from Cornwall to the Irish eastcoast. The best fishing for big blue marlins and big yellowfins i've ever experienced in the Atlantic was on Ascension island, which is less easy going as the Canaries and also as Cabo Verde islands. website: http://www.atlanticfishingcharter.com/ You'll find some words about fishing trips to Ascension island of me and two friends under: News 2003: 23rd november, and the 25th and 30th november, and also 20th march 2003 Within a few weeks we will be there again for 16 full days of continuously big game fishing. It's a dream of mine, have been fishing for many years now, but I want experience this atleast once. My advice: if you want to fish big game for once and you can't afford to do it often: do it good!!! Tight lines. |
