Another battery question post.

O.K., I took the Ranger out for the first time yesterday and after about 4
hours of fishing and motoring about I noticed that the battery that starts
the motor (cranking) was getting noticeably weak. I also feel that I'm not
getting full power from my 2 trolling motor batteries. So, the question is
: Do any of you have specific name brand recommendations or style/type
suggestions? I think I will replace all 3 this week if I can, but I don't
know where to look for a good set. The batteries were only about a year old
when I picked up the boat 3 years ago, but I think they've finally had it.

P.S. Me and a friend had 10 stripers on the Hackensack River in case you
were wondering, none bigger than about 4.5 lbs. but most over 3.

The problem with the trolling motor batteries could very well be the size of
the feed wiring. I had 10ga. on mine and the batteries would only last a few
hours, plus if I ran it on #5 speed for a bit, the TM would blow the 50amp
breaker. I changed the wiring to soft 6ga. and I've never had another
problem, and the batteries last me all day no matter how much I use them.
Check to see if there's anything else drawing off of the starter battery
besides the cranking, if there is, change all of the extra to the TM
battery.

The TM didn't die, but it doesn't have the juice that it used to. I use the
boat almost weekly for 8+ months a year and I fish hard on a river half of
that time. I don't really think I have any wiring deficiencies. I'm just
asking for brand and design type advice for battery replacements. The
current batteries are Delco and I have access to any Delco products at cost
(uncle in the business) but I would consider something else if it were
better.

I'm a firm Delco fan after 18 years of trying/buying. I bumped up to group
30s for the TM after using 27s forever. The extra capacity makes a real
diference in wind or current.

On my Waco I moved the batteries to the front of the boat and dramatically
shortened the cables. Now I can get two days of use out of a pair of
batteries.

I can't really do that, I have a battery box and I'm stuck with it. I think
these batteries are just done. I could milk them till there's nothing left,
but I'd rather not get stuck or have issues with trolling against current.
The easiest thing now is to replace them.
