Default Went fishing for my own rod!

Hi all, does that subject look funny or what? No it was not real cold
or anything like that ;-)

Anyway, I tried to get a couple of hours of fishing on the local lake
early Sunday. None of the lures tied on to the baitcasters were
working so I grabed the last rod in the boat, a spinning rod. I had
not used spinning gear in a while and when I went to make a long cast
I must have forgot to open the bail. DOH!

When I swung the rod it flew out of my hand and into the lake!

That was an expensive rod. Not wanting to loose it to the lake I did
some quick thinking and grabbed the marker buoy and tossed it at the
bubbles coming up from the sinking rod. There was a lot of wind on the
lake so the boat was drifting fast. Could not find a loose treble hook
so I tied on a small weight and a couple of worm hooks back to back on
to another rod and started casting near the buoy. Sure enough after
about 10 casts up comes the rod. :-) Glad that worked out.

So try to remember if you ever loose a rod overboard and get that
sinking feeling, don't give up. And don't forget the marker buoy,
because of the wind I don't think I would have gotten the rod back
with out it.

Later, DC

You need my lost rod retriever, it's sold in most tackle stores and Wal
Mart, it's a metal chain with a bunch of clips on it, some uninformed
think you would string fish on the device, but this is not correct, it
is a lost rod retriever, not a stringer. cost is under two dollars and
could save a couple hundred dollar rod and reel

This is how it works,, tie a heavy line to the end clip,, open all the
other clips, and toss retriever into the water (tie the end of the line
around your wrist) where you think the rod is,, slowly drag it along the
bottom, if one or more of the clips hangs on a snag, they will bend and
release, when they grab your rod, it will pull it out of the water
without bending.

Keep one of these rod retriever in your tackle box or boat,, even if you
always keep your rods secure, people you will fish with will loose their
rod from time to time, and after they loose theirs, they will want to
borrow yours, now do you want them throwing yours over board as well ?

These are really useful when fishing with small children.

Remember Don't let others string fish on your rod retriever

The preceding was Spam, because you must "buy" the rod retriever as no
self respecting bass fisherman would already have one

I do believe that was a bit of sarcasm aimed at someboy's detractors. LOL.

Been there and done that with when others in my boat have thrown rods over
board. Mostly were cheap combos that I carry in my boat for the kids to
use. I had a nephew that want to try my Calcutta on a custom rod. It was
rigged for bottom fishing to catch redfish. We were anchored in a moving
current 25 feet deep and throwing out to a point catching specks, reds and
some bass under a cork. This area is sal****er brackish marsh but has a lot
of fresh water that moves through when the Mississippi River diversion is
open in January. It is not uncommon to catch sal****er and freshwater fish
in the same area. So I picked up the rod out of the rod case and made a
couple of cast for him to show him how it works.

I then handed him the rod and he tried his first cast. He did pretty good.
He made his first cast and it went about 20 feet and only one small birds
nest. He worked the birds nest out and tried a second cast. That is when
disaster occurred and he threw rod and reel over in the moving water. Not
thinking, I dove into the water and made three dives before I came up with
the rod and reel. I then swam back to the boat with the rod and handed to
him. He is laughing his behind off. We where not in a bass boat or a bay
boat at the time but a 16 foot flat or Jon boat. With the current, I could
not get back in the boat without possibly flipping the boat over. So I hung
on to the side and had him lift the anchor and start the boat. He then
drove it to the bank where I could get back into the boat.

I not sure if you ever been around sal****er marsh but the mud stinks. It
was summertime and I always carry extra clothes in a vacuum bag for
emergency purposes. This was one of those times. I cleaned up and
continues to fish the rest of the day limiting out on trout and bass. Got
home and cleaned the rod and reel before cleaning the fish.

Since then, I have purchased rod floats. They wrap around the rod and keep
it floating in the water if you throw it overboard. I never had to use it
but I keep a couple in my boat for when I take kids fishing. I then put it
on there rods just in case. I only lost one other rod when I laid it down
on the deck of the bass boat with a lure hanging in the water. Went to
retrieve a softdrink and when I turned around the rod tip flipped down and
there was a big splash next to the boat. The rod handle went up into the
air and in a split second the rod was gone. It disappeared under the water.
not to be seen again. I live in South Louisiana and the water around here
is not very clear so seeing which way the rod went was impossible especially
when the water is 12 to 16 feet deep.

Well the in-laws just bought a couple of those floaters for their rods.
You know considering they fall asleep mid-afternoon if they are not
kept busy and then there goes their new rods. It's saved a couple of
expensive rods so far. Also helps with the nephews, they get a little
over eager to be casting that rod out. Though I have to say my 8 year
old nephew sure has the fishing bug in him. He's even found himself a
honey-hole and fills sympathy for my husband if he doesn't catch
anything. So every once in a while the nephew will throw one of his
little fish that he catches over to my husband so my husband can "get a
chance to catch something". Kids are quite humorus to go fishing with.

Was actually funny. Would not work on the last rod that left the boat
without permission. 185' of water.
