Default PA bear attack

I just read a very brief report regarding an attack by a black bear on
a 21 year old female camper at Hickory Run campground yesterday. She
survived the attack, apparently when the bear was driven off by other
campers. From what I read, this bear seemed to have no fear of
humans.
I don't have a direct link, but I'm sure this event will be showing up
n the media today.

You boys at the Penn's clave watch your sixes.

I find it odd that the game commission is not considering this an attack.
You get the feeling that PA is having problems coming to grips with what
seems to be a growing problem.

It doesn't sound like an attack to me either. The bear gave
chase after the woman started running. That's not predatory
per se, just instinct.

What I find odd is that those three idiots aren't going to
be charged with any crime. If PA wants to come to grips
with bears it had better first come to grips with the humans
and educate them, with a stiff fine if necessary.

I agree with you, Ken, I think that they should be charged. PA is so
trashed up to begin with, you think they'd immediately fine them
heavily for camping in a no-camping area.

And you see folks leaving food all over in the state parks, chuckling
at the cute bears who come into their campsites.

My brother-in-law was attacked by a black bear while he was in his tree
stand in northeastern Pennsylvania this past deer season.

Is he ok? What happened? Could you describe it a little bit?

I wonder if seasons matter. Was he rifle hunting or bow hunting?

We've always encountered bears in the June - October timeframe.

And with that, we're in agreement as well.

BTW, I'd fine the idiots as well, but that won't prevent the PA from losing
a lawsuit for failing to address an obvious problem the next time a law-
abiding camper gets mauled by a bear.

But these 3 weren't law abiding campers. I'm not pretending to know
all about this entire situation, and I'm not pretending to know
anything about bears beyond my experience, but they were clearly
camping in a no-camping area (one of those beer bottle strewn bonfire
sites a quarter mile from a road and next to a waterfall). I've camped
in many of the PA state parks, and I believe they all give instructions
on proper storage of food regarding bears. Like - don't leave your
food in your tent.

But - is PA failing to address a bear problem? What is it? What is PA
failing to do?
