Default Montauk Sportfishing Report 6/20/05

6/20/05

Finally this past week the sharks started to get caught. Nothing exciting,
just a couple of bluesharks a trip, but at least it started. Star Island
held their shark tournament this weekend, and the late start to the season
may have held back the number of entrants. They usually have over 250 boats,
but this year there were only 220, but that's still a lot of boats. And the
fishing was good enough, with big blues, threshers and makos taken. The
results are as follows;

1st Place overall - "NEXT GENERATION" - 467 LBS Thresher

1st Place BLUESHARK - "ROLL TIDE" - 284 LBS

2nd Place BLUESHARK - "SUBDIVIDER" - 275 LBS

3rd Place BLUESHARK - "AGIOS NICOLAOS" - 253 LBS

1st Place Mako - "PORT OF EGYPT" - 260 LBS

2nd Place Mako - "HIGH COTTON" - 247 LBS

3rd Place Mako - "AGIOS NICOLAOS - 207 LBS

1st Place Other - "NEXT GENERATION - 267 LBS Thresher

2nd Place Other - "CAPT MARK" - 312 LBS Thresher

3rd Place Other - "LORI JAY II" - 294 LBS Thresher

The Montauk Marine Basin tournament is this coming weekend, and you can call
631 668 5900 for information about it.

Inshore leaves a lot to be desired. Last week I mentioned that the striped
bass fishing was erratic. It's seems like it's getting less erratic every
day, and that's not necessarily a good thing. Catches vary widely from day
to day and boat to boat. Right now a limit of bass is something to crow
about - very loudly. Tour the docks when the charters come in from a half
day trip and you're likely to see some boats with as few as two or three
bass for the trip, or less. There are likely to be a couple of thirty pound
fish here and there, but it is more likely that the fish are anywhere from
just legal to 10-12 pounds.

Fluke fishing is nothing to rave about either, although it's better than the
bass. There are some fish all over the place, but not a lot of fish
anywhere, although that varies day to day as well. Dogfish can be a problem,
but you can't count on them either. I was out on Wednesday, and every place
I fished had the doggies. Saturday I was out to all the same places and
never saw one.
