I'm looking for material preferences/opinions for mayfly spinner wings
from those who use artificial materials. I have, and still do, use burnt feathers and wound hackles, but would like to limit the input to artificial materials that provide a decent look and some buoyancy (rather than debate natural vs artificial materials). Polypropylene yarn and Hi-Viz are on some of my flies, but I'm interested in trying other materials that others have been successful with. Z-Lon? Thanks, Jeff |

Thanks, Jeff I'm not exactly the most experienced tyer, but I like the way CDC looks, as in this pattern I fish occassionally: http://www.danica.com/flytier/tmodic/tws.htm Dan |

I've seen one or two flies tied with spent foam wings. It's the thin
translucent stuff used on Halo emergers. The whole idea leaves me cold .... the blokes that use them seem to like 'em. Steve (lookin' for a jumper) |

Thanks Vince,
I have quite a collection of Organza. In fact, I tied quite a few spinners with the material as wings, and really like the look it provides. The problem I had with it was floatation on flies in the 12-16 range. No matter how I treated the organza, it wouldn't provide floatation to the fly (sank like a stone). Are you treating the Organza material with something? Thanks for the Needloft recommendation. I'm heading out to a Walmart at lunch today, and will look for it. Jeff |

I use it (and VERY sparingly) only on flies 18 and smaller. I treat my dry flies with silicone shoe waterproofing liquid. It seems to work OK. ( Thompson's Water Seal also works very well.) Thanks for the Needloft recommendation. Use that sparingly, too. I also like it, in a light color other than white--for visibility-- for wings and posts. vince |
