Group member Jack Dalzell is currently in 8th place in the Everstart on
Erie out of Cleveland.

The first day was brutal and over half the field called for trailers and
didn't make it back to the weigh-in, but today was calm. Jack was in
10th yesterday and moved up to 8th today. He ended the prelims a good 9
pounds off the lead, but FLW zeros the survivors (top 10) out going into
the 3rd day, so he's even with the leaders tomorrow morning. Hope he was
saving his best fish of the final two rounds, and only catching enough
to make it to day 3!

Of course I know somebody who tried that, only to learn that two of the
other guys in the top 10 had been hammering the fish he was saving.

I talked to Jack today, and he is confident about his chances.

On day one, he battled 6-foot waves all day, saying his 40-pound trolling
motor was on high speed for four hours straight. Somehow, he overcame the
beating meted out by the wind, plus the charlie horses from constant
pressure on the control pedal, and came up with enough fish to get in the
top ranks.

Heartbreak #1 occurred when his co-angler, attempting to net a 5-pound
smallmouth for jack, failed to watch the tip of the rod he held in his other
hand. Somehow, as he bent over to reach for the bass, his rod tip became
entangled in Jack's 4-pound test line, and when the fish thrashed, the line
snapped and the bass dove out of sight.

Jack was dismayed. The co-angler probably felt like crawling into a tackle
locker to hide. This fellow was no rookie. I think Jack said he was a real
veteran, good enough to have taken co-angler first place a week or so before
in the BFL championships. Just shows anyone can make a rookie mistake in the
excitement of a moment.

The two stayed at it a while longer before starting a punishing trip back to
the weigh-in. Somehow, as they fought the gale, Jack's foot struck a lever
that drained his livewell. That counts as heartbreak #2. By the time he
reached his destination, all five fish had gone on to meet their Maker, so
Jack was hit with a hefty penalty. I think he still came out with over 16
pounds for the day. His co-angler did well, too, ending up in second place
the first day.

The good news was that he was competing for a place in the top ten, and he
achieved that, so he's on a level playing field for Friday.

By the way.... his day one co-angler wound up in the top ten and he drew
Jack again for Friday. If he had been in another boat, Jack said the guy is
not the type to intrude on the fish Jack had put them on.

No details of today's event, other than the weather was fine and the bite
was still on for those who could find fish.

Maybe after the event is over Jack will provide more details about the type
of lures, presentations, and pattern he was using.

Jack really a class act and I'd love to see him win this. The man know Lake
Erie well, and there's no doubt that it'll take pure luck to beat him. (Or
some really big bass!)

Victory eluded Jack this year.

Friday was calm winds, and Jack's fish refused to cooperate. He eked out
only one bass for the day, and lost another good fish that might have
helped, but his performance left him in tenth place. The weather forecast
for Saturday promised wind, which should have helped, but the fish that Jack
had located were scattered or suspended, and he had to work hard to bring in
two fish for the day.

So, Jack took home 10th place overall, with a plaque and check, and the
satisfaction of having earned a place in the Everstart finals. That was a
great achievement, especially for his first year back after a two year
hiatus in which he pretty much stopped tournament fishing to work on an
advanced degree in Engineering.

Congratulations, Jack.... we'll be rooting for you next year!

Joe
