It's been way too long since I last battled the wily trout, maybe a
month or more. Our moving to the new home is done, but there's more work now than the move itself. Same old story - we've all been through it. This morning seemed like the best time to break the dry spell, so I headed out to the "secret spot" with some new tackle (CFO reel w/new WF3F line) and an old friend, the KPOS 3WT, 'though it seemed strange to me to have hundreds of dollars worth of gear attached to a $40 rod. The rod didn't seem to mind the snooty company, though, and did its job admirably. I started off fishing with one of Wayne Knight's Patriots, and brought up several fish for refusals. Then I switched to a #16 Elk Wing Caddis and nailed the first fish - a beautiful rainbow about 18". This was a blast on the three weight, and I was able to bring it to net fairly fast and let it rejoin it's chums. I fished the Elk Wing a while longer, but it didn't have the mojo in it that it did with the first fish. I switched to a #12 Davy's Parachute Caddis with black turkey wings, and latched on to the second fish - another rainbow, this time well over twenty inches. If the first fish was fun on the three weight, this one was like a Nantucket Sleigh Ride! It pulled, jumped, bucked, dove, and ran for about a minute, although it seemed like five. Once it tuckered out a bit, I brought it close enough to net and the fish barely fit in. A quick pop out of the fly, and back it went. This one was ****ed, and took off with a jump. The rain started to come down a little heavier, and I decided I'd quit while I was on the upside. It doesn't get much better than this, and I was reminded of the common thread that binds us all together here. -- TL, Tim --------------------------- http://css.sbcma.com/timj/ |
