Dumb newbie questions about raincoats

OK, never having owned a fishing raincoat, I have a really stupid question.
Do you wear it under or over your gear vest? I can imagine not wanting to
get the vest and all that gear wet, but I can also imagine not being able to
get access to all that gear either.

Or do you buy one loose enough to wear either way? That would make for one
very baggy jacket, imho.

I've worn my wading jacket both ways- over and under- and it just depends on
what I'm wearing it for. If it is raining and raining hard, I obviously
wear it over the vest- or just take what I think I'll need out of the vest
and put them in the jacket. This September when we were on the Au Sable, it
drizzled the whole first day out and I was glad to have the jacket over the
vest to keep things dry.

If I'm wearing it for warmth, as I did this past Sunday (brrr!) when it
wasn't raining or snowing, I just pulled the vest on over the jacket.

It gets a bit bulky when I've got- in cold weather- several layers of
Capilene and fleece, the vest and the jacket, but in spring rain conditions
(errr, think Penns :-) everything fits just fine under the jacket, vest
included.

Note that my body cavity doesn't take up as much space as does the body
cavities of some other ROFFians, but the above works for me. :-)

If I am on the stream and it starts to rain, then I put the jacket on
over the vest. And my girth is much bigger than Claspy's tho his cavity
might be....never mind.

If suiting up to fish in damp weather, I use a lanyard and stick what I
think I will need in the jacket's or the shirt pockets and leave vest
in car. If I think I will need more than the jacket and shirt pockets
will hold (please note use of word *think*) then I will wear vest over
the jacket and let it get wet as it will dry. If it is a warmth issue I
wear vest over jacket.

Everyone has there own way of doing things.

I would say most wear them over their vest or chest pack.

Here in California it seldom rains so we don't sell that many short fishing
rain jackets.

If you are going somewhere that you know it is likely to rain a lot like
Alaska in the Fall, then get a really good "commando" Gore-Tex raincoat.

If you are in the mountain trout streams I like a very light rain jacket
that I can keep in the back of my vest. It is good for a rain jacket and a
wind breaker too.

After having got my butt soaking wet,cold and shivering and having the
weather change half way down the stretch of the AuSable I now carry a
plastic one in my vest all the time to fit over everything. I have even used
large trash bags in an emergency

rivermanWhen it's raining all day I ditch the vest and just take what
I need in the fishing jacket. Most "real" fishing jackets have huge
pockets that will accomodate fly boxes and many have tons of hidden
pockets, not to mention the pouch in the back of all fishing jackets.
You want a somewhat baggy jacket so you can layer up underneath. I
would suggest a Simms G3 , but are they pricey. I've had one for three
years now. The Simms Guide jacket is almost as good. I've had one of
those for 6 years now...it is still working very well. Patagonia makes
another good product. (after having tried the vest over & under, i've
found I don't like either way and just go with the jacket.)
