OT- Birkie Pics

Skied the Korteloppet (23 K race) at the Birkebeiner last week up in
Hayward WI. For the almost total lack of training i did I was
satisfied with my time and experience.

If anyone wants to come up next year let me know. We already have the
Jacuzzi suite reserved and we'll be glad to take our turn sleeping on
the floor (theres only one king size bed).

Some of the ski patrol uses backcountry skis during the race. The
more laid back atmosphere of the short race brought out a more
eclectic mix of skis than I've seen in the long race. Lots of touring
skis and 20 year old racing skis. Even some woodies.

I've never raced- not really a racing kind of guy- but the Birkie sounds
like quite the event.

And I'm serious about sharing the room. The Indians (we stay at the
local Casino Lodge, actually a very nice place) are very tolerant of
people sharing their rooms with other skiers over the weekend. As far
as racing skis go I've got several pairs and even more light touring
skis. As long as we can find boots that fit you and the skis bindings
we'd be set.

I'm also not a racing type but for 95% of the skiers there, its a
participation thing not a racing thing. It *is* a gas.

It's been a long time since I skied.....and I'm pretty sure I wouldn't want
to participate in the race even assuming that I could get back in shape by
then.....but a trip to da nort woods in February in good company would be
fun, and I'd be willing to supply logistic as well as moral support.

I've actually got a couple pair of light touring skis as well, but I'd
definitely get some sidelong glances with 'em. While not woodies, they'd
probably classify as antiques as far as skiing gear goes.

I've got Birkie 2007 on the radar!
