Am in the midst of tying & restocking those patterns I use most during
the spring/summer/fall.... and I notice--not for the first time--that I seem to tie the Prince nymph both with wings tied curving downward, http://tinyurl.com/g7o4l and with wings curving upward, http://tinyurl.com/k7y39 Over the years, I guess one way or the other has struck me as looking "better" somehow, and then I tie it that way for a while, then I switch back, more or less as the fancy strikes me. I can't say I've ever noticed that either style is any easier to tie or any more productive than the other...... (You see both in books and on tying sites. Sometimes you will even read the wings referred to as "horns." Odd.) So, just out of pure idle curiosity, for you tiers.... - Do you have any preference, one way or the other? - Do you think it makes any difference? - If so, what difference does it make? - Bonus question: Which way was Doug Prince's original tied? Just finished tying a dozen today! I tie them "downward" - Do you think it makes any difference? Nope - If so, what difference does it make? None - Bonus question: Which way was Doug Prince's original tied? Doesn't matter! JR Danl |

You mean other than undying admiration? ![]() On another forum, someone suggested that the wings tied down would make the fly more streamlined and it would then sink faster. Personally, I think that tied up they'd act like diving planes and drive the nymph down faster g, but I'll leave a final ruling on that one to Dave and the other submariners........ ![]() |

- Do you have any preference, one way or the other? I always tie them wing down (curved inward). I don't think that's as much a 'preference' as a 'tradition'. - Do you think it makes any difference? Yes - one way they're curved in, the other, well, it's the other way. - If so, what difference does it make? I suspect curved in reduces the tendency to spin on the tippet. Never attempted to test that though. - Bonus question: Which way was Doug Prince's original tied? Danl got that part right. -- Stan Gula http://gula.org/roffswaps |

I tie them curving downward. No special reason, I just think it looks
better. Never tied them upward, so I have no basis for comparison. |
