My first day of fly fishing this year was on a brrok near our home. One that
I have fished for.... well since I was a young boy. My 10 year old daughter was dangling worms off the culvert and catching little brookies. She was so excited! This was not her first time fishing by any means... but her first time truly enjoying the experience. She baited her own hook, took her own fish off, and turned as many back as she caught. By the time I got my rod out and leader straight I realized my nymphs were back at home. We live in Maine and April 2 (second day of fishing) still has some ice on the water. I had a pale morning dun (size 16) and a Dark hendrickson (size 14). What the heck... I had nothing to lose. The water was frigid and I didn't expect any fish. As I lit the pale morning dun on the water.. after 2 casts the trout started jumping up to grab the dries!! before long they were rolling all around where I was fishing. The fly had actually fooled the trout into thinking there was a may fly hatch! The fly was working great!! even after about 8 fish. It still looks great 15 feet up in that tree. Right next to the hendrickson that followed after catching a bunch more. The two of us caught a bunch of fish and put most of them back.I am glad to report I got beat by my little girl and her worms though! The brook trout there are 100% wild and usually quite finicky... except this day! It's going to be a good season here in Maine I think. _______________________________ www.fly-fishing-flies.com Flies from $5.60 per DOZEN and more! _______________________________ |
