... Why is it that most/all pro and semi-pro bass fishermen use bait casting reels when in tournaments, or filming their TV shows. Is there some advantage to the way a bait casting reel casts or retrieves. tnx. The biggest thing is that baitcasters do not twist line. Everything else is arguable, and atleast partially based on the angler's skill set. For instance I like to throw poppers on a spinning rod. Soemthing about it just works for me, but my mentor and bass fishing teacher Dave Willhide casts the same baits slightly further and just as accurately with a bait casting rod. -- Bob La Londe - Webmaster www.YumaBassMan.com Tornament Director www.YumaProAm.com *** Free account sponsored by SecureIX.com *** *** Encrypt your Internet usage with a free VPN account from http://www.SecureIX.com *** |

Diamond Dave:
A lot depends upon the fish the guys are working for. Tackle and bait choice depend on the line weight required, reel line capacities and retrieve speed, water clarity, fish location, size and species of fish, under water structure and potential abrasions, bait weight, current, if the angler needs to us a floating or sinking type line. (particularly today with all the super lines and fluoros). I like to think that fishing equipment is a lot like golf clubs. Each rod and reel combo has it's place. You don't use a sand wedge to putt. (Some say my golf game seems like I do). I often fish for smallmouth bass and need to work structure in deeper very clear water often vertically. I find that a Walleye fishing technique works best so I use a spinning tackle. If I'm after large mouth in the deep weeds a heavy bait caster with heavier line is best. It's that simple really.
