Default fawn lake "pertinacious" throwdown

ken fortenberry initially said there wasn't a fawn lake in yellowstone,
that it was a fantasy (or something similar)...ultimately, faced with
the overwhelming proof from others and the yellowstone map that there is
indeed a fawn lake, he retreated to an acknowledgment of its existence,
but boldly asserted it is basically nothing more than a soggy weed-bed
at some point after ice-out. he basically calls me and 3 other
eyewitnesses liars about the lake and the fish in it. so... here's the
deal...

on any day to be set between july 9-17, 2005, i invite any fawn lake
non-believer or pessimist, including yellowstone kenny, to take a hike
with me to fawn lake for the purpose of catching the brook trout
resident in the lake. if it's a soggy weed bed, i'll walk/slog to its
center and allow photo proof of kenny's claim. likewise, if in fact
there is a fawn lake, each nonbeliever shall swim to its center so i can
take a picture.

better yet, if kenny accepts this challenge and chooses to come for the
day...should he prove me wrong, i will reimburse his plane fare, buy him
a meal or pay him $20, and publicly acknowledge i was wrong and he was
right. on the other hand, if i'm proven correct that fawn lake is more
than a soggy weed-choked puddle, kenny will swim to its center for
photos, pay me $20, publicly admit here that he was wrong, and apologize
in writing mailed to me for calling me, joe, choc, and warren liars (i'd
never expect an apology on roff). if he doesn't want to walk to the
lake, we can rent horses (about $250 each for the day), and loser also
pays for the other's horse rental.

btw, for pessimists, here's what craig mathews says about fawn lake:

"You can reach this five-acre brook trout lake from the Glen Creek
Trailhead, 5 miles south of Mammoth, near the Golden Gate."

from Craig Mathews and Clayton Molinero's "Yellowstone Fly-Fishing Guide".

seems to me a fair way to settle the matter... what say you?

Wow - if you'll do all that for someone calling you a liar, what will you do
for *me*? Contrary to Ken's facts, I choose to believe my lyin' eyes and
accept there is a Fawn Lake. Buy my plane ticket, feed me, and take me
horseback riding and I'll stand on my head in Fawn Lake. ;-)

Better crank up the Wayback Machine if you intend to be there in July
2005.

Screw all this waterwalking, horses, and swimming stuff...if you can
even get close to what you are proposing, I'll supply a briefcase full
of cas...er, bright, shiny beads and let's set a date sometime in about
July, 1405. Then, we find us some Indians with a deed to
Manhat...actually, that's small thinking...let's find any Indian with a
deed - hell, the whole CUS (hey, if need be, I'll supply 2, even 3
briefcases full of wampum), and then, you can HAVE friggin' Fawn Lake,
whatever it is, as part of your 10%. And if there is no lake, how much
could it cost to put one in?

Oh, man, you mean he can't actually do it? Damn. I was planning on
making Gates AND Buffett green with envy..."...billionaires? Well,
sure, that's nice and all, but when you girls get some REAL scratch
gathered up, come over and join me in the Trillionaire's section of the
club...I'll vibrate y'all up a cocktail..."

All right, there is a Fawn Lake. But there is no North Dakota. Who here, has
ever been there or knows anyone from there? See? - I'm right. Oh, there
might be a few jokers that will pretend they know there is a North Dakota,
but it's a hoax.

More than just a few jokers, I'm afraid. It seems to be a widespread and
deeply entrenched conspiracy. One doesn't invent Lawrence Welk on a mere
whim.

That's a good way to get a nose full of weeds Timmmaaay.

I know it's hard to believe I could pass on such a gracious,
heartfelt and generous invitation from the divorce lawyer
but I have at least three good reasons for doing so; time,
place and dumb.

If I were going to Yellowstone to fish I'd go in late August
early September and I wouldn't waste my time anywhere in the
vicinity of that so-called lake. That's time and place, as
for the dumb, if fishing is what you're after the only thing
dumber than hiking up to that so-called lake once is hiking
up there twice.

But I am looking forward to the trip report !
