The question of where attendees at the second annual Upper Peninsula Yearly
Exploratory and Reconnaissance Soiree will be staying came up in another
thread this morning.

No firm decision has yet been made. The most likely location is some
friends' cabin adjacent to the middle branch of the Ontonagon river near
Bruce Crossing, but this is negotiable depending on who and how many will be
attending, how the dates of attendance overlap, where everybody wants to
fish, preferred accommodations, etc.

I'd appreciate it if everyone planning to attend would chime in here so we
can sort it all out. So far, it looks like Bill Claspy, John Baker, Jeff
Miller, Wayne Knight, George Cleveland and I are
committed.......um.....well, let it stand.

Fisher's shack can accommodate 8 or so without much trouble, and there is
plenty of room for tents in the field on the property. There is no
electricity or running water. There are gas lights and a genuine wood fired
sauna......the benefits of which are manifest to all who have ever used one
and a treat in store for those who have yet to experience it.

When I spoke with John recently, he indicated that he would probably be
hauling his popup camper. I'm pretty certain that he won't object to its
use as a satellite camp for a small party to spend a night or two away from
whatever becomes clave central, thus extending our range.

Michigan's upper peninsula is a relatively undeveloped area. All the
necessities of life are readily available but those accustomed to easy
access to exotic viands, beverages and other luxury items will be well
advised to bring their own. To put it another way, the equivalent of spuds
and PBR in any line of goods won't be hard to find but if sushi and Stoli is
more your style you'd better pack it in.

Our dates are fixed due to Kristine's work calendar,
September 2-9, and we'll probably be in a cabin near
Watersmeet http://www.wildernessbayresort.com/
although we don't have reservations yet.

Me and Kipper the Hound are gonna drive up to Watersmeet
next week to camp out in a Forest Service campground,
get a lay of the land and hopefully fish if we can find
some fishable water this early in the season. If there's
still runoff everywhere we can always put the canoe in a
lake and fish for bluegill I guess.

Hm.....lake fishing country. Not much in the way of streams over there.

Got a particular campground in mind?

If you haven't fished Cooks Run, you should give it a go. US 2 crosses it
near the intersection of FH 16, not too many miles (maybe 10) east of
Watersmeet. It's pretty small water, particularly south of US 2, so I would
think it'd be relatively safe from runoff.

If you fish the Iron, please send a report, as the locals have told me it
offers good fishing, but I've not yet been able to confirm that.

I can state that two years ago during three days in June it offered
very good fishing

I've always concentrated on the lower end of Cooks Run......from the trestle
on up for a mile and a half or so. Looks like you'll be the guide du jour
for the upper end.

Ditto. I've fished it a couple of times just upstream from the town, but
never with any great diligence or success. The trouble, as you know, is an
embarrassment of riches.

No, but streams are in easy driving distance and a
lake with a swimming beach was an absolute requirement.
Unless there's ice on it Kristine will swim daily.

Burned Dam Campground on the Middle Branch of the Ontonogan
at Meximine Falls. Plans are to set up camp Sunday evening
and stay a few days.
