Spinning rods hookset

Do any of you have any trouble getting a really good hookset when using a
spinning rod.I am using a BPS MH 6'6" extreme mated with a Stratic with 6 lb
line and I am willing to bet that I lost 6-8 fish from a poor hookset.Went
back to casting rod with 17 lb line and bite slowed down but catch rate per
bite went up .Went back to the light line setup and more bites , less
caught fish.. Need alot of help with this because light line setup because
water is just to clear[IMO] to use heaver line. If I'm way off base with
this thinking let me know

You answered your question right there, increased catch rate with heavier
line. Part of the problem I believe is that there's a lot of stretch in 6
lb. mono, hindering a good hookset. I fish quite a bit with 6'6" - 7'
spinning rods, and get decent hooksets, but I use 8 or 10 lb. PowerPro.

Using a 6'6" medium heavy spinning rod and 6 lb. line doesn't make a lot of
sense to me. Go to either a superline or heavier mono. If you feel that
line visibility is a problem, try a flourocarbon leader. 6 lb. line is
meant to be used with lighter tackle.

But that's just my opinion,

Steve is right on target here. IMO, 6# mono has just a little better
hooksetting ability than a rubber band. For that reason, I totally quit
using mono years ago (except when fishing topwaters), preferring Hi-Vis
Fireline or PowerPro with fluorocarbon leaders. I adjusted my fishing habits
to match the lack of line stretch in these combinations, and have been
totally satisfied with the results.

I guess what this all boils down to is, if I want 6 lb diameter line size,
I'm probably going to have to use 20 -30 lb braided line. I guess I'll
pick some later this afternoon and give it a try.I never thought about line
stretch but think that braid might be the answer

What kind of bait and rigging are using on the spinning rod? Open hook, Texas
rig, etc?

I use light line spinning combos and seldom lose a fish to poor hooksets.

My lines are usually 6 lb. or 8 lb. test, no specific brand.

I use flourocarbon even for topwater since I discovered silicone spray, or
fly casting wax, or even chapstick on the first several feet of the line
will make it float.

I don't have any problems. I use a 6'6" medium power rod and 10# mono. Is it
possible that your hookset is too light because of the light line, and
you're really driving it home with your 17# baitcasting outfit?

If you still want the light line mono switch to the 8lb yozuri hybrid line,
I use the 10 pound on my med spinning outfit and never really have too many
problems with hook sets, then again I set the hook on everything I feel,
rocks logs sticks stumps and the occasional fish : ) I only use the yozuri
and stren braid for all other reels. I did just try the spider stealth but
I'll stick with the stren, it's better imo

6 lb mono is perfect for drop shotting and fishing small plastics 1/8
ounce, open hooked jigheads. Other than that, I use fireline on my spinning
rods, and hooksets are never a problem.
