I had a great 16 ft. wooden drift boat built from a kit supplied by Rays
River Dories (I think the link is www.raysriverdories.com or something similar. Things went together well. The hardest part was getting used to working with the marine epoxy (I used West Systems epoxies...and it's good stuff). It was the nicest handling drift boat that I've had...but I have to admit that there is more upkeep with a wooden boat. I sold it a couple of years ago...and could kick myself for doing so. ![]() Have built several diftboats, the last one based on Ray's design (his shop is in my neighborhood). Instead of conventional frame construction I used "stich & glue" techniques. No frames/ribs mean a lighter / roomier boat yet still strong. Boat has surivived some big water including several trips on the "River of No Return"..(Salmon) Jeff Dabear wrote: I had a great 16 ft. wooden drift boat built from a kit supplied by Rays River Dories (I think the link is www.raysriverdories.com or something similar. Instead of conventional frame construction I used "stich & glue" Ray Heater is one of the world's great people, and I think Ray build's the best (traditional framed) wooden driftboats ever made. In fact I know so. 25 years of boat building experience tells me so. But if you wan to build a stitch and glue driftboat, you either have to figure it out on you own (perhaps that's what you did) or you have to buy plans from Jason Cajune or Sandy Pittendrigh. Those two are the only game in town. Self promotion is usually a big no-no here. But the subject did come up and that is the way it is. |

![]() To implement Rays' design using "stich & glue" construction I had Ray build a set of temporary frames out of inexpensive wood. I then attached the precut sides and bottom with sheet rock screws then did epoxy fillet\ between frames on the inside and glass tape a the outside gunwhales.... frames were then removed. Have done several boats this way.
