From the Brazil, IN times www.thebraziltimes.com:

Fisherman killed by piece of pipe bomb shrapnel that pierced his heart

By IVY HERRON

A Brazil man was killed by a pipe bomb while fishing alone in Birch Creek,
located at the end of Towpath Road, near Clay City over the weekend.
Paul "Joe" Lynch, 31, of Brazil, was in possession of two homemade pipe
bombs, one of which exploded. Lynch was found between 1:30 to 1:45 a.m.
Saturday by friends who had been searching for him since Friday evening.
"A shrapnel piece from the bomb - we're not sure which part - passed through
Lynch's heart, killing him instantly," Clay County Coroner Rick Swearingen
said Saturday.
Dr. Roland Kohr, who performed the autopsy at Regional Hospital, in Terre
Haute, found no traces of drugs or alcohol in Lynch's body.
Bomb technicians from the Indiana State Police Bomb Squad defused the
remaining pipe bomb, which was made from a steel pipe.
"Adults, and kids, use pipe bombs, without thinking about the consequences,
to blow up mailboxes and other things for entertainment," Swearingen said.
"This is an example of why the handling of explosive devices needs to be
left to the experts."
Some details surrounding Lynch's death arenot being released due to the
ongoing investigation by the Clay County Sheriff's Department.
The pipe bomb may have been intended to be used to stun fish in the creek,
according to Clay County Sheriff Mike Heaton.
"We don't know at this time exactly what he was doing with the device," said
Heaton. "This is a very unusual case, not something we normally see."
Possessing the materials to make a pipe bomb, or being in possession of the
pipe bomb itself, is illegal according to Sheriff Heaton.
"A pipe bomb is a very unstable device," Heaton said. "No one should work
with explosives when they are not qualified to do so."
Other responding de-partments include Clay City Police Department,
Trans-Care and Indiana State Police.

It seems there is a contender for the award:

http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20060809/...brazil_grenade

RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil (Reuters) - A Brazilian man died on Tuesday when he
tried to open what police believe was a rocket-propelled grenade with a
sledgehammer in a mechanical workshop on the outskirts of Rio de Janeiro.

Another man who was in the workshop at the time of the explosion was rushed
to a hospital with severe burns, a police officer told Reuters. The workshop
was destroyed and several cars parked outside caught fire.
Police found several unexploded army issue rocket-propelled grenades in the
workshop. They believe the ammunition had been brought there by scavengers
wanting to sell them as scrap metal, but they also are investigating a
possible link to Rio's heavily armed drug gangs who often raid military
bases.

What? Did ya figure they had to gather together enough pieces before they
could determine that it was their friend?

You know that a *true* friend isn't someone who will come bail your ass out
of jail.

A *true* friend is someone sittin' next to ya in the cell who says, "****, I
wish we hadn't done that!"

This must be a Brazil thing. We in the US blow up other countries. They
blow themselves up. As long as they don't take out innocent people or
fish at the same time, I'm all for it.

Possibly anger over the World Cup?

Weird coincidence... maybe, the first candidate, in Wayne Knight's post, was
from Brazil, Indiana....

BTW, when I was a wee kid, visiting logging relatives in the Washington
Cascades, I got the impression most people fished with explosives.... well,
from the stories, any way.
