Yooper Itinerary?

We think we'll be up the night of the 11th. Any general idea where
folks will be?

Aside from Bill's desire to hit the Fox......which makes perfect sense
considering where he's coming from.....and John's to spend some time
back in the canyon at Sturgeon Falls, no one has expressed any strong

north of Marquette I think we should try some of those for the first

Forest Campground at Little Lake, just off hwy. 35, about 6 miles

Michigan Atlas.

After that, we move or stay according to consensus, trying to connect
with everyone else as they show up and find good water. Frankly, after
doing a bunch of research in the past month, it looks to me like Little
Lake will do as well as any for a base camp. We can radiate out from
there and a lifetime wouldn't be enough to sample all the water
available. Generally, the area to the west looks a bit more appealing
to me......more hills, less swamp.

Unless someone wants to make rock solid plans in advance, we'll have to
rely on updates by phone. This won't be a problem as long as we stay
near Marquette or the airport, but cell phone reception can get a bit
dicey out in the sticks.

Any thoughts?

....btw...i'd like to overnight my big, rectangular, sleeping bag to your
home to bring along in your car. it's one of those cheap bags that
isn't made for packing or hiking or airplanes because it rolls up real
big, but it's comfy down to 20 degrees. ok with you? will you be there
on thursday to receive it by fed ex?

I'll be at work till 3:00 Thursday.....don't know whether they'll just
leave it on the porch. If they deliver later, I'll be around. John is
bringing extra sleeping bags for you and Frank. If you prefer one of
your own, buying a new one in Marquette (or I can pick one up somewhere
today) probably won't cost any more than having yours shipped.

didn't know john was bringing extras. that or buying in marquette makes
more sense, so i'll nix the fed ex deal. not sure of the streams we'll

based on the streams we fished last time, and my carry-on travel
limits, i figured they'd be adequate for this trip. anybody bringing

yeah, but i've done a lot of thinking about it in the last 24 hours (as
my fed ex excess shows). minimalist packing versus comfort needs... 2
of this, 3 of that... this-n-that... it's all been very confounding.
until just now, i remembered the nature of the merry band of fellow
travelers on this trek, smiled, and relaxed. it was a zen moment. but
zis is now, and i gotta be sure to remember to take...aaarrrggghhh!!!

I've got a long list of potential streams, most of which we won't be
able to get to in just one week......****, the Escanaba watershed alone
looks like it would be worth a month. Your rod selection will be fine
for all of them. The only thing that might warrant bigger guns is the
possibility of encountering lake run browns IF any are coming up to
spawn this early and IF anyone should decide that the pursuit is worth
the time. I'll have my old St. Croix 7/11 wt. along for just such a
contingency.

I've been sitting here for the last hour or so, trying to make up a
packing list of my own. This is a new and not at all enjoyable
experience for me. In all likelihood I'll soon abandon the project in
favor wandering aimlessly around the back yard, poring wistfully (yet
again) over the siren song score of faint blue squiggles in the atlas,
or sitting and staring balefully at a clock I suspect has begun to run
at about half speed. Sometime in the late afternoon or early evening
I'll start to rummage through various cubbies, closets, the garage, and
the basement, and I'll slowly build an immense heap of stuff that will
unaccountably be missing everything of importance. Everything will
trickle into place over the next three days.

Yeh, gonna be different for me. I'm used to hauling everything in my
truck, so usually wouldn't worry about what I was going to have to
leave behind. And now that the fuel prices have dropped, it would have
been cheaper to drive it than fly. Oh well.
I'll pack this afternoon. Will give me time to run to the store if I
find I'm short on something. Just tying flies now, watching a
recording of Sharpe's Challenge from the BBC.

I always print two copies. One I keep on me one goes in my luggage in
case I take a swim with the first.

I talked to Bret and Charlene this morning, and then again to them and
Jay and Jan and Patty (don't worry about who these people
are.....you'll get the whole sordid family history in a few days) just
a few minutes ago. Jay (the *******!) and Patty fished the Yellow Dog
yesterday. Didn't do well, but on a previous trip a couple of weeks
ago, he says, they caught lots of fish.....20-30 in a couple of hours.
Water levels are low.....it's been another dry year.....but not
drastically so. I got some good information about where to go, how to
get there, etc. Also got some more information about various other
streams. Jan says the sauna will be ready for us, and Bret says he'll
have a couple of 25 inch browns in the freezer for us.....looks like
the spawning run is already on. So, a trip over to the Fisher shack
appears to be obligatory......not much of a hardship considering the
aforementioned amenities, and some awesome (and very familiar) water.

And then, there's all the other water that nobody has even so much as
looked at yet. It's beginning to look as if this trip wasn't such a
bad idea after all.
