It's legal in every state in the US I'm familiar with, once you catch a
bass it's yours, the only rules is putting it in another body of water
(another lake or river) they frown on, because of the possibility or
transplanting a diseased fish.

It is not legal in Az to transport live game fish without a transportation
permit. It is not legal to keep them for study without a scientific
collection permit.

If bought from a fish farm the collection permit is not required, but you
must still have a transportation permit or transport them under the permit
of the fish farm.

Definitely check the game laws of the state or province wher you are doing
this.
