There's nothing like the real thing, baby.
I took my 5wt out to the pond today for a bit of casting practice before a fishing trip next week. This afternoon the wind was out of the west at 15-25 mph and gusting to 35 mph, great conditions for casting practice with a 5wt. Actually fishing the pond in the wind, and actually trying to catch a fish or two, is far superior to mere lawn casting. I rediscovered that hard as it is to cast into the wind it's even harder to cast accurately with it. And being able to circumnavigate the pond let me practice aiming at Alaska to plop a fly in Florida. I haven't used my 5wt in a long time, it was nice to pull it out of the tube and fling it around a bit. Kipper the Hound has a new CFD (Canine Flotation Device) that he's getting used to before I try to paddle him and me through Class II rapids again in the canoe. We're going to fish one of the nine Blue Ribbon Missouri trout waters and I've been told to expect trophy-sized wild rainbows (not native, wild) on this Wild and Scenic River. Uncle Wally's flies should arrive Monday, me and Kipper hit the road Tuesday, TR to follow in a couple of weeks. -- Ken Fortenberry |
