I was wondering if you knew what "hunt for the centre" meant in terms of
crankbaits. If you have one it may be a prize fish taker. They are usually made out of wood and seem to have a mind of their own in terms of their action. Veer to the left or veer to the right it will hunt for the centre. It would be passed along weed lines. I thought i would pass this on to generate a little discussion for this thread. |

Yes indeed, it was invented by an old timer name of R. Soul.
It was a rip-off of the "Basserino" and was loosely known as the R. Soul Plug. These little babies could really find the centre of things, fast, bar none. It came in only one color and two sizes. The later, the floaters, were indeed made of wood and sometimes went by the name of "Woody" or the "Howdy Doody plug" because they had no mind of their own, were made of wood and controlled by a man with string. One had the old "tremble" type hooks and the other had the "ring" hook, predecessor to the modern day circle hooks. The earliest sinking ones were developed by a lad named Dick Hertz. Composed of soft, dense, hard materials that sunk quickly to the bottom and just lay there. They were one of the first bio-degradable rustproof lures. You could just about pass one anywhere too! But it just wasn't meant to be as ol' Dickey moved on to open a car rental business. The floating lure was demanded off of the market by a CO named Johnson, citing, while using one, he didn't want his buddies to see him fishing with a "Woody". (Canadian version). You can see an old floater at I thought I would pass this along to further generate discussion in this thread since there has been none. -- "Lure builder" wrote in message ...
