Harry's Visit((((((((((((Long)))))))))))))))))

Harry made it up here last night but not without the delay due to weekend
traffic. We launched at about 7 p.m and fished for almost two hours, nothing
spectacular but we both caught some fish before the rain kicked in,
including Harry's good fish that wrapped around some sticks. I managed to
troll over and reach down and grab it. Lightning and thunder drove us off
the lake and back to my house for some rest before this morning.

We woke up at 4:30 and hit the lake at 5. We met up with Dave V and
launched two boats, me and Harry on mine and Dave V on his boat.

Fishing started slow as the overcast skies and foggy wet conditions had
slowed the bite considerabley as compared to recent days. After fishing a
nice back cove without a single bite Harry was kinda thinking that all my
fish had been photoshopped in. I assured him it was still early. As we head
back to the main lake we approached tha canal that leads into the main lake
area, Off the point I could see a bass chasing baitfish in about 4-6 inches
of water. I immediately cast my red speedworm over as Harry cast his senko
back off the point towards open water. The minute my worm hit the water I
felt the fish grab it and start running, at the exact same time we both
reeled down, set hooks and had our first ever double on. Both fish were
about 2 and a half pounds but i suspect that Harry had the larger of the two
when both were boated. I decided that we should continue to fish that side
of the cove as there might be more bass feeding in the submerged sticks that
the cove offers. I only managee to grab 1 more fish back there before the 3
of us head out to the main lake. It was right after we got out and were
cruising the shoreline that I saw Harrys pole bend, I was confused because
it looked like a fish grabbed his senko but he was ready to poke the rod in
the water thinking he was hung up...until the line started swimming. I asked
if he was going to set the hook and he did and sure enough Harry's second
keeper of the morning was boated.

I head back to the launch for a jacket as the rain was approaching and the
wind was up a bit more out in the open. Dave called in on the Nextell to
report his first fish caught, meanwhile Harry had just grabbed his 3rd. Uh
oh not on my home lake!!! We head back out to the middle of the lake and
more submerged timber. I head over to the deeper side where it drops off
into about 18-20 feet from about ten feet where the sticks are. It paid off
as I hooked into a decent bass on a Junebug speedworm. A few moments later I
felt a slight tap saw the line jump and set the hook, This was a big fish, I
managed to get it up into the boat and it weighed in at 4lbs 3 oz. It had a
nice sized catfish in it's throat. Thats two big bass with catfish in their
throats in 4 days. (Anyone make a fake catfish lure?).


We continued to fish for about another hour to an hour and a half. Harry
went on to catch 4 more bass including a nice 3lb'er out of some shoreline
sticks that are just downright nasty. I managed two more including a little
guy on a jig and pig and a nice 2 lber on a junebug fluke. All in all we
fished for about 4 hours and landed 13 bass and numerous pickerel. It was
great to get out with Harry again at least for a few hours. Today was also
loser wears a dress next time out day. Dave V being king of the 1 fish 10
inch dink will get to outfit a selection that remains to be seen. I might
stop by today to get him a nice prom dress or something. I'll have to see
what the local salvation army has in stock. Unfortunately neither me nor
Harry remembered the camera so no pictures from this morning. I do have a
few from last night that I'll be sending over to www.Outdoorfrontiers.com as
soon as I can. Wish I could have had the camera today, a lot of nice fish
were taken on what started as a dreary cold day

The double we hit was worth the trip up in itself. The word of the
day: "Junebug"
Now if only Dave was still bald it would make for a phenomenal picture
in whatever dress you pick out. He just can't win for loosing.

One of the bait shops in my area sells a soft plastic "willow cat"
bait - its often used by the walleye types on the Mississippi R. when
they can't get the real thing. Looks like a small catfish, complete w/
whiskers. I can send you a package if you'd like to try them. Send me

3-4 differant colors.

Seems like I saw such a lure at Walmart a while back. If I remember
correctly, it was about 2-1/2 inches long, with a realistic looking
catfish jig head, and came with several soft plastic bodies to match.
Next time SWMBO makes me ---oops--- invites me to go to Walmart with
her, I'll look for it and get a manufacturers name.

these catfish were 8-12 inches in length each. I might try some modification
this week on some bigger swim baits

10-12"? Maybe you should think about laying your hands on some
Muskie lures - then you'd be in that ball park. The few I have
are 7-8" or more.....
